hello my 2000 f350 sd 4x4 ext cab longbed 7.3 6speed 6 inch lift 36 inch tires predator tuner....yuck 4 inch exhaust turbo back 6637 filter hutch mod fpr shimmed boost egt and oil gauge. 281000 miles i have owned for a year plus been agreat truck but i have no idea on history. my clutch is going. it rattles at idle unless i puch the prdal down. kinda like a clunk clunk clunk sound. recently it started to vibrate when i take off and will make some bad noises while idling. i can make it slip in 5th and 6th with the tuner in high setting. from what i read i already have a solid flywheel. thats good so i will need a clutch kit. disk, pressure plate . throw out bearing, and pilot bearing. right? also a new clutch fork? where can i get these parts and what should i expect to pay? i am on a tight budget with kids the x and all that bs. i will be doing all the labor myself. just point me in the right direction. thanks
chris
stuff i'd do: 281 K miles means that probably the "improved clutch fork" is already installed. even if it weren't, you'll know when it is bad because the pedal will slowly migrate towards the floor within say a 6 week period, and it will be hard to enagage a gear at a stop sign. they are $80 - $150 depending on source
noises at idle are either pilot bearing/input shaft or a funky throw out bearing so replacing both is a kinda high priority. Kwikordead reccommends a kevlar bushing, and I hear they are cheaper.
the vibrating means a warp or a burn spot, you'll need to replace or resurface the flywheel. won't know for sure until you can see it. I'd go junk yard for parts if it were bad
various people like various brands, but lot of places have LUK online at cheap prices if you can afford the shipping wait.
If I'm strapped for cash, I will do the above, unless i'm really strapped for time. then it is just throw out, pilot and clutch disc and suffer until I get it really fixed.
Not a whole lot to add to the above post, he covered it pretty well. A serious tuner might require an upgraded clutch disc. Soutbend and Luk are the popular ones, with Luk being more affordable (so it seems). Both offer a softer pedal, so you might consider removing the helper spring off the pedal after the swap.
Also, my experience is the clutch hydraulics tend to go out a few months after the clutch is replaced, so save some money for that.
Just to throw it out there, if you need a clutch, check out www.valairinc dot com/performance Find a clutch you like, and note it's price. Call Dan (owner) or Kevin (shop manager) and tell them Cody from Death Row Diesel sent you, and they will sweeten the deal up even more. But I also know they have dealers everywhere, and there may be one close to you. But tell them I sent you and they will get you set up.
That being said, Valair is always my choice. But LUK and Southbend are great clutches too. Never hear anything bad about them. Like said before, it's all about your choice. I just wanted help you out if you chose Valair. Good luck man.
