about a week ago i thought the head gaset blew on my 1990 f150 with a 300 six so i took it all part and found the head o be cracked so i order a notherhead and when it got here i found it not to be the exact same as the old one it is missing the hole to mount the rail looking the the goes into the exhuast chamber an at the top of the rail it goes into a rubber into some contraption above the alternater i think it has something to do with emissions but not sure so i have three questions
A. what is that thing
B. do i need it
C. will it make me fail emmisions
all help is appreciated
We need pictures... You're description, while I'm sure it makes sense to you, sounds like a cryptic message from mars. Chances are you're talking about the EGR valve or the AIR pump. Both are needed for emissions. If you remove either one it's going to fail the visual inspection, it might pass the sniffer test, but it will fail the visual as the required parts aren't there.
well we dont have visual test here at all just the sniffer and i will try to get pictures but if youlooked at a 300 it is not hard to find it runs the length of the head and it is right nex o the valve cover on top of the head it has metal lines six of them one going into each one of the exhuast chambers
due you think it will pass if put rubbing alcohol in the tank i did that to my 95 cobra and it didnt have an egr valve or SMOG pump and it passed with flying colors
oh really that would not be good at all even if i keep the egr valve i guess i will just have to hollow it out and weld it back on then that is what i did on my cobra and some acohol in the tank and it passed amazingly putting out almost no hydrocarbons my body put to much in and it didnt put any hydrocarbons out and the told him he would have to come back later that machine was broke so he went to a different testing center a few minutes later and it did the same thing so if you car wont pass all you have to do is put a 8 ounces bottle of rubbing alcohol to a quater tank of gas and it barely read at all
Catalytic converters are a good thing cause clean are is a good thing. Please try to keep it working. Same with the EGR, these two components do not hurt performance(the EGR even helps) and are good for the air. I'm no tree hugger but I like to breath.
If your fuel injection system is working well and you have a modern cat that is close to the motor it should stay clean. The air system pumps in extra air to help keep the cat "fired up" but if the motor can do it, there's no need for the air system.
well thank you and the are very close to the motor and for you sir i will not hollow them out if at all possible or until they clog up so hopefully it will work and thank you for all your help
are you sure about cats not hurting performance? i am pretty sure they cause a restriction in the exhaust system and build up backpressure, might not kill performance but sure don't help it. and a smog pump has parasitic drag on the engine
The smog pump requires LESS THAN ONE (1) HORSEPOWER to turn. The cats are restrictive yes, but they do not hinder performance that much. The fact is that the computer's programming requires these items to be there. The computer is what controls the air and fuel mixture. If you go messing with things that the computers uses you confuse it, the truck runs rich all the time and the fuel economy goes through the floor.
