87 F150 Roar

I've got an '87 F150 4x4 300 6 cyl long bed that is making a strange roaring noise. It starts after it has been running for 5 - 10 minutes. From inside the cab, it sounds like it is on the driver's side somewhere along the firewall. From under the hood, I can't really hear it, much less pin point it. I know it is not the coffee can thing as I disconnected it while it was running and there was no change. The sound is kind of a roar or maybe something like a vaccum cleaner running. The pitch of the sound changes slightly when I turn on the fan inside the truck.

This may not have anything to do with it, but I also appear to have some fuel delivery issues on occassion. It appears that the roaring noise gets louder or changes pitch when the fuel issues start. The symptons of the fuel problem are such that it feels like I am running out of gas. This only happens randomly. When this happens, the truck will idle ok, but will not accelerate.

Any suggestions as to what this may be and how to address would be appreciated.

TIA,

Chris

On that year truck, I believe there is a rail mounted fuel pump on the drivers side, just about under the firewall. That could be starting to fail, and they tend to make a whirrrrring noise. Might start there, letting it run then crawling under the drivers side frame rail. That's what it sounds like to me.

Thanks for the reply Rick. I'm taking the bed off this weekend and I will pay special attention to the pump on the rail.

If its a roaring sound I would think that it might be the fan clutch.

I agree with what pc 2000 said about the pump and it would probably make a louder whirring sound.

Thanks for the reply Texas. I found some posts from a few years back talking about the fan clutch. I'm not that mechanical. How would I go about testing the fan clutch?

Let me throw another thing into the mix. I also have a squeaking noise from the engine when it is damp/wet outside. It doesn't do it much, if any, when it is dry. It's hard to tell exactly where the noise is coming from, but I think it is in the area of the power steering pump. Sounds like a belt. I put some belt dressing on the belt, but it didn't help. Would a fan clutch make a squeaking/squealing sound when it is going bad? Why would it do it more when it is damp/wet out?
