I just picked up an FE engine from a guy for free. He says he has had it in his barn for a couple years and it ran when he pulled it, but just wants to get rid of it. So I brought it home thinking I may need it or some part of it some day.
Just trying to see what I have. Here are the numbers I have found on the block.
6K75 - Drivers side of block
40352 - Front of block
C6ME-A - Passenger Side Front
29DIF - Driverside Front
I was going to do that, but where do you measure from on the spark plug hole? Less then 1/2" difference from a 352 to a 428 is a big difference. Say it is a 360. So 3 1/2", is that to the lowest point on the spark plug hole?
Insert dowel into spark plug hole till it contacts the top of the piston. Rotate the engine till you locate bottom dead center. Mark the dowel even with the plug hole. Rotate the engine again till you locate top dead center. Mark the dowel again. Remove the dowel and measure between the marks.
There are numbers on the heads between the two center spark plugs
and on the intake manifold too.
4 barrel, right?
Carburetor/s come with it?
"29DIF" is the mold's number is all.
Dearborn Iron Foundry :)
Hmmm...
"C6ME-A" ?? :)
George Reid sez :
It could be a "mechanical lifter 428 block" and mentions pulling the
center freeze plug and look inside for the 428 cast into the block.
It is only a 2 bbl. Yes I got the carb, it's a motorcraft. Even have the factory (cracked and rusted to hell) exhaust manifolds. The engine is complete, including starter, alt., belts, hoses, etc. Looks like it was yanked out and then just set in the corner.
When I get home tonight I will take a look at the numbers on the heads and post them. If it is a 428, I might be yanking that 390 out that I just put in.
2 barrel? :/
Did some 428's come with 2 barrel carburetors? :)
Anyway, I don't "know" anything about FE's that I haven't read. :(
Steve Christ sez:
something about blocked oil galleries in 428 blocks for use with solid lifters
Either way, you've been given a cool old engine! :)
Whatcha going to volunteer to do for the old fart? ;)
He need the rest of the barn cleaned out?
Some fence need mending?
He's just a good old farmer that I help out in the spring and fall on his farm when he needs an extra hand. He also lets me hunt on his CRP ground, so I will clean a couple pheasants for him and his wife every couple weeks. Then when my buddies and I go deer hunting we will usually stop by his place so he can see what we have harvested for the day.
I love stopping by his place, shooting the *****, and if I plan it out right his wife will invite me in for coffee.
So to answer you question Alvin, yeah, I'll be doing a little bit more work at his place this year. He keeps hinting about needing a new roof on the house. So me and the nail gun will have to be making a trip this spring.

Good on you IZZYAZ. What goes around comes around.
So I am looking into a set of headers now for the 390. Since the 390 is suppose to be a '66 Mercury 390 in a '74 F100 4x4 can I just get regular FE headers that fit a '74 F100 4x4 or do I need something special? How about other parts and pieces? Water pump, fuel pump, oil pump, etc.? Anything I should look out for?
I've decided to swap it into the F100 this winter. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start the build.
