Trucking is a necessary industry, Monsterbaby. If there's ANY subsidization that could conceivably be justified, it would have been (or would be) the subsidization for lower diesel prices at the pump. One could blame poor business models of the Big 3 for some, if not most, of the troubles they are seeing....But how could truckers and trucking be blamed for $4.79 diesel? (much lower now, of course). Truck 'A' needs several hundred gallons of diesel to move 1500 miles to ship 60000 lb of freight, and the truck is going to get 5 to 7 mpg to move that freight.......Period. Ain't much you could do to improve that business model.....
And the high fuel costs affected nearly everything.
well I can tell you that as a driver I am doing what i can to help conserve fuel when possible even though I don't own the truck anymore and don't pay for the fuel anymore I still feel the need to try and make sure the company is profitable thus helping keep my job as secrue as possible. in my case the truck has an average idle time of less then 2% (this is WAY lower then average and even within this company they praise the less then 30% of the drivers that are keeping idle time below 10%)
when I started I was averaging around 5.9-6.0 quartely fuel economy, with changes in driving habits, idle time etc last quarter the average for our truck was 6.62, now when you figure the truck goes 938 miles per day (two of us drive it) that works out to approx 15 gallons PER DAY savings, times 5days 75 gallons out to 50 wks thats 3750 gallons per year savings (let alone that we drive a route that is 48 miles each way shorter then the other 2 teams that run this same route)
Some things can be done and are being done although epa is killing us, example the one of the other teams, was averaging 6.4 mpg but got one of the newer 08 trucks with the new DPF, just talked to the woman when they got their last quarter report 5.6mpg with this new emissions truck, that is going to hurt profits thank you epa.
I don't think transportation will ever go broke. It will change, but you'll still need individual trucks to make final deliveries.
IMO subsidizing fuel is a disaster. It screws up supply and demand and you just change where you pay for the fuel from the pump to your tax bill.
Mike
Oh trust me I am against subsidized fuel, but I think you misunderstand the "fuel surcharge" it's not government subsidy, it's charging the customer for the cost of fuel when it exceeds a set level. example would be they figure on a 6mpg vehicle, base price of $1.20 (using generic numbers here ) so if fuel is at 3.20 gallon now that is $2 OVER the base so you divide that by 6 and come up with 34 cents per mile approx and THAT is what the fuel surcharge would be paid by whoever is paying the freight bill to the truck owner (although right now there is no law saying that companies HAVE to pay it or pass it down to the truck owner which is what the legal fight is about)
I used 'subsidization' in general terms, Mike....But I'm pretty much against it also.......That's why the 'if' moderator was thrown in there. I'd subsidize fuel for trucking before I'd subsidize the Big 3 or the banking/lending industry is I guess the point I was trying to make.
Yep, look at the increase of SPAM making and sales. The Hormel factory has increased its production and its workshifts were told to expect working 24/7 for a very long time.
By the way, SPAM was first marketed in the 1930s depression as a less expensive meat alternative. Still one of the best products for the money.
Spam..yum yum..Fried spam on toast with mayo...Yum...
I got layed off last Mon and was told maybe call back of April 09 but I just might stay home and do the At Home Dad thingy....
There are alot of people around here getting worried about layoffs. I work in the aviation/areospace industry. First there was the boeing strike and now rockwelll collins is laying off 300 poeple. Rockwell is one of our biggest customers so who knows whats going to happen to us.
Everybody around here is starting rumors and worrying.... I have no idea why I'm not worried at all. I guess i've just figured that i've made myself invaluable to place and been cross trained in so many different jobs, that unless this whole place goes down, they are going to keep me around.
the last time there were layoffs here (after Sept 11) they cut out some little jobs here and there, but not really any of the skilled trades so to say.
