I bought a 97 F-350, DRW, 7.3L PSD about 2 months ago and I finally got a chance to replace the air filter this weekend. Well, the PO had broken the filter housing and had it covered with tape. He borke it where it goes into the tube to the turbo.
Does anyone know where I can find another top air filter cover? I can go to a dealer, but I was trying to stay away from that if possible.
I was looking at cold air, kits but I don't want to go that way just now with Christmas right around the corner.
I ckecked the local pick-a-part today with no luck.
Go with a 6637 filter, you can get them from fleetfilter.com for about $28 + shipping, you can easily make a connecting piece out of some 4 inch exhaust pipe. This is so much better than stock system.
The 6637 is the way to go. Cheap and easy to do. But if you are hell bent on a new lid, I think I have a few laying around......I think. But believe me, you'll thank yourself for going with the 6637. Easier to change, breaths alot easier, and no more risk of sanding a turbo.
952X4, thanks for the quick reply. I think this might be a good way to go.
What do I do with the filter sensor that is located in the lower housing? Also does the filter just sit where the housing was? I guess I will need to fab up some type of mounting/supports for the filter.
How has this MOD worked out for you, have you had any problems?
I just tied off that sensor to the fender wall with a cable tie. The filter does sit right where the stock box sits, the filter is about 12 inches long and 8 inches in diameter. it fits in there just great. I just went to the local home center and bought a piece of 45 degree 3 inch elbow PVC pipe, it fits perfectly. You could also get a piece of 4 inch diameter exhaust pipe bent as well.
This mod works great, only problems i've had are a slight increase in mileage and an increase in power... Great problems to have...I learned of this mod from this great site, it was my first mod and then I replaced the downpipe and put on a 4 inch exhaust, sure makes a big difference...
Once you remove the old filter box, the 6637 filter will just lay right there where the old box was. Some guys can use a short piece of straight exhaust pipe, (about 3 or 4 inches long) for connecting the filter to the intake tube. On mine, I needed a 45 degree elbow to get mine to fit.. As for the air sensor, I threw mine away. The temp sensor, I zip tied it to some wires under the hood near the new filter.
