Hey guys, I'm new to the board and just bought a '76 Highboy. I need some help with a decode. The VIN is: F26YCB34347. Next the tag says :Type/GVW F262. Trans: G and Axle: 24J. The last line on the tag reads: DS01976560938. I couldn't tell what that was for though. Basically, I need to know what transmission, transfer case and axles I have. The previous owner said it has a 460 in it, but I'm doubtful unless it was swapped in. Any help is appreciated!
The above info is from this sites vin decoder. Your truck didn't have a factory 460 as Ford never put one in a 4X4 truck untill sometime in the 80's There are hundreds of '70's trucks that have had a 460 transplant though. Your's could be one.
the code for G is automatic trans I asume its a c6 it doesn't specify and I couldnt find a 24J but a 24 is a dana 60 with 4.10 gears your tag wont tell you your transfer case but there will be a tag on it probably a divorced np205
that is a posibility, and on your t-case look at the back of it and between the rear output for the driveshaft and the cover for the front output you will have a 3 bolt cover (np 205) or shaft with a nut on it (np 203). The only thing I could find under the listing for J in the front axle code is power steering. Compare your front axle cover to your back axle cover, if its the same its a swapped in dana 60, if its the same shape but smaller its the dana 44 which is what you normally find in these trucks in two weight ratings
looks like ya got a canuck truck! eh! lol i got a canuck truck too! with a Texas box! lol, i am sure number dummy will chime in soon, and give ya a good dose of wisdom, that man is a treasure on here! i wish we had 10 more like him! he is doing this site a service he does not have to do, i hate when people disrespect him and try to rip him down! like respect him and if you have a correction do it in a nicely fashion! just a tip that's all! we all deserve respect!

Thanks, Matt
24J: 24 = Dana 60 / 4.10-1 / non Limited Slip / 5200 lb. Rear Axle Capacity // J = Power Steering
1976 = 1976
DSO: 560938:
56 = Davenport IA Ford District Sales Zone office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
0938 = Domestic Special Order Number.
This truck was special ordered by the original purchaser, not just "bought off the lot." Has something that was not an RPO = Regular Production Order.
This could be anything from a non standard color, or a special axle, or body, or interior trim...the list is endless.
You didn't list the COLOR code, it appears after the Wheelbase, before the MODEL code (F262). Is there a COLOR code, or is the space blank?
You also didn't list the BODY code, it appears after the MODEL code.
** Just because the truck was assembled in Canada, doesn't mean it was sold new there. In fact, most trucks assembled in Canada were (are) sold in the US of A.
Compare the VIN on your registration with the VIN on the Warranty Plate.
Peeps swapped left doors due to damage, forgot to swap over the correct Warranty Plate.
No 460 4WD's till 1983, and all of these are F350's.
The 360 engine uses 5 valve cover bolts, 460's have 7.
