had to get that off my chest its been bothering me for a WHILE. ok heres my situation, i got shorties, made up a y-pipe for those headers, now i CAN"T get the pass. side to seal up right at all i've dropped it realinged it , everything, if i had the money i would get LT or new shorties but im outta cash , please help, everyone else has had good luck with theirs? WTF?, this has been a prob for like 8 months, what can i do to seal this?thx jake
I had a similar problem with Hedman Headers (from Summit) installed on '69 Mustang 351W. After reinstalling several times over several days, I finally thought to check the header mounting flange -- it was warped. I returned the bad header and got a replacement one...and right out of the box, it was also warped. I ended up having to deal directly with Hedman, and they mentioned something about a quality control problem. Finally got a new one that wasn't warped.
If yours is out of warranty...and is warped...you might be able to get a machine shop to true it for you.
Also, go for the expensive copper gasket for the header-to-engine seal.
yeah i had the same problem i couldn't get either side to seal i ended up welding them on to the y-pipe but i couldn't get the welds right and they still leaked....... bought a set of dynomax longtubes and they work fine
Yeah its the ball and flange thing, they seal to the head great(got expensive copper gaskets)...IDK what i want to do, i want LT's but i need this to pass emission inspection, damm NJ, LT's are easy with no t-case and i could play with the exhaust then..., i want to swap a 351 with a zf in so i got thinking to do, its a 96 mass air truck so idk if i need to change pcm or not i want mass air still, but for the time being i need to get rid of the leak, thanks for your suggestions ppl, i will stay posted
Not to be a *****, but typically you get what you pay for. It's usually better to wait a little longer to get something rather than settling for something cheaper. Just my 2 cents
i think the flange is good, i had it lined up when i first did it then 3 days later it was leaking, its just annoying when you work full time and go to school, at the end of the day when your done fixing other people's cars , your just beat and i don't want to mess with it, its annoying, thanks for all the suggestions, but for 94 5.0 you don't need to point out the obvious, genius, my two cents(i'm not a baller right now). i will keep you's posted. i want LT"s if i can somehow get emission friendly
I'm having the same problem with my summit headers. I can't get either side to seal. I think it has to do with the way the stock manifolds distorted the y-pipe flange. It's obvious that the summit headers flange fits slightly different than stock and it's making it impossible to seal.
I think the only solution is to weld up new y-pipe flanges so they fit the summit headers flange perfectly
well my buddy bought a set of these a while back and he didnt have any problems with the y pipe seal. but another buddy did although his problem was that they kept loosening up. i got a set and i cut the ball on the end bigger for more flow and i haven't had one problem with em at all.
I just installed Summit headers (Patriot badge) on the 95 5.0L. I have leak on pass side that seems to quiet when hot. I had to work Y pipe alot when tightening. I will soon replace Y-pipe for cat replacement. If new pipe is a problem; I intend to cut crossover;install flanges to header and reweld crossover to the new shape. I believe my current pipe is warped to the stock manifolds.
Did a set of Summit shorties on friends 94 F-150/351w, no problems except having to "persuade" one side of the Y-pipe to match up. Same with the Summit shorties on my F-250/460 minor persuasion to get y-pipe to seal, no other leaks or problems afterward.
