Sounds like Crickets

97 Expedition, 4X4, 89K, 5.4. Here's the issue, when the 4WD selector is in 2H I have no problem. When I switch to A4WD I start getting a slightly noticeable sound from the front end that I can only describe as sounding like crickets chirping. Now if I switch into 4H the sound is louder, but it can only be heard when accelerating and disappears when decelerating.

My theory is either the u-joints on the front driveshaft or the front differential pinion shaft bearings. I'm ruling out the axles only because they should be making the noise even in 2H.

Any thoughts or experiences to share? Thanks.

I concur with the u-joint theory...your description is that of dry/worn needle bearing. I would not rule out the drive shaft though, its not engaged, nor has torque on it, while out of 4 wheel.

Also, do you get this more/less/same while turning? If more or less, output shaft u-joints, ...if same, I would suspect the driveshaft. But in any case if your replacing any one of these, it is best to do all since you'll be set up for it and in the same area. Not to mention it will only be a matter of time before you find the next weakest link.

It acts the same whether I'm going straight or turning.

Then I would replace them all, they aren't that much, its just the work entailed.

I'm sure I will be changing them. I just needed to hear a note of confirmation from someone else. I appreciate the relies, thanks.
