When I first bought my truck, I noticed I have 2 panels. One for heat and one for a/c. The a/c panel is just to the right of the steering column where a storage box would be. The engine also has the a/c compressor but it just sits there free-spinning. Any clues to this?
There were other questions but i've forgotton(i'll think of em eventualy).
Possible that it was a dealer installed option?? I'm thinking that's the most likely answer as the factory HVAC controls would be integratged into the panel in it's normal location.
Can you provide a picture? I'm curious to see what this looks like. Dealer installed A/C is rather rare now as it's standard on most, but not all vehicles.
Does your truck have the vents in the dash in the usual locations on the passenger side?
As for the compressor spinning freely, somone simply removed the belt.
what i mean by the compressor spinning freely, it doesn't engage so it just spins like the other items(water pump, power steering, etc..). Here's the pic you were wondering about(i hate Iowa winters). Sorry the picture's so big, camera has one picture setting.
that's what i'm sayin. The controls are where a storage box usualy is. Is there a way to tell all the options that were installed on this truck? I didn't get the window sticker(who saves thouse nowadays) so I don't know.
It should be freewheeling, "spinning" with everything else. When you turn the A/C on a magnetic clutch engages the compressor itself.
If that doesn't happen there are a number of things that could be wrong...
I'd check the fuses first.
Then the wires going to the compressor for voltage when it's calling for cooling.
You'll be able to figure out what is at fault.
not super worried about it now since it's sub-freezing weather here in Iowa. I already know i'm going to have to purchase everything after the compressor if I want air conditioning since those parts were taken out for some reason.
Verrry slight chance that ya may have something better than a sticker. IF your seat is origional, there is a possibility that there is peice of paper bundled up inside of there underneath the drivers side (usually on the drivers side)
That's sometimes called a "broadcast sheet" and it will list ever option, build info...etc.
Mine is a '86 and I threw the origional seat away and only noticed the broadcast sheet when it was upside down in the dumpster. All the way from September of 1986 and it was still there!
That's a dealer installed A/C kit. In the rangers/aerostars and 87 to 92 trucks it was a little bit different than that. You must have an 80 or 81 truck.
pickups an 84 - manufactured May 1984 and i'm gonna go hunt for that sheet since it does have the origional seat in it(and is in really good shape for being 24 years old at that).
It won't be on the build (broadcast) sheet though. Only factory installed options will be on the build sheet. The Dealer A/C unit was installed after the truck was built and delivered to the original Ford dealer who installed it in their service department.
i was wondering if the clock spring was busted since when i tried wiring in a switch across the terminals wither i had the switch on or off, the horn still sounded.
So I'd have to contact the dealer that installed it for a wiring diagram?
The odds of finding a diagram for Dealer A/C is extremely remote. It's been over 24 years and dealers love to throw away stuff they (or preceive that they) no longer need. How I got some of my service books. Ebay may be another option to get wiring diagrams. However my Ford wiring diagrams do not show Dealer added components, only factory installed ones.
Also anyone have an answer about my horn? I feel naked without it.
I just read that question above, and it sounds like your horn pad is defective. you may need a new one.
