enough engine in the 6.9?

is the 6.9 enough engine for a 2-ton international dump-truck? i am looking at a nice old 1985 IH 6.9, and was wondering about the power. its got a 4-speed tranny, and a 2-speed axle. only 75,000 miles

the 6.9 is a good motor when you put a turbo and plumb an air intake to get cleaner air and a few fuel adjustments it will run like a striped ape.oh and open the exhaust up as well.the guys on here with the 6.9's will be able to tell you what they have done

I have a 6.9L in a service truck that is...... well....let's just say is over it's GVW.
It isn't a speed demon at all but it gets the job done, it's TOTALLY stock.
A low first gear that wiil get it rolling would be important.

If you do want to modify the motor it will run with about anything in it's class.

I like these engines, but they are slow. That truck is going to be slow, but it will get there. I have never driven a truck exactly like that one, but plenty of others in that class, and if you hit 55mph unloaded, that will probably be the max. If you keep the glow plug system and the fuel system in good shape, it will run with the pedal to the floor everyday and give good service.

I drove a 5 ton two axle dump truck that had a 300 I6 in it, so I bet a 6.9 will handle this truck just fine if it has the gears. But as Franklin put it, I bet it won't go over 55. These 6.9s may not have a lot of power on paper, but they have never give up never surrender attitude.

I have driven much larger trucks with HP numbers close to what the 6.9 produces.

1960 Autocar tractor with a 220 Cummins with a 10 speed, 80,000 pounds gross.
1966 Chevy tandem axle log truck, 6V53 Detroit Diesel rated at 212 HP with a 5x4 tranny grossing around 50,000 pounds.

None of them were fast, back in those days 55 was fast.
But they always got me where I was going, eventually.

The 6.9 will get you there, but you will not be the first one there.

Sounds like it may be a fine truck.

Do take a close look at the odometer though, I know the Fords in that era only registered to 99,999.9 miles.
So what appears to be 75,000 miles may actually be 175,000 or 275,000 miles.

Right now mine only has 45,000 on it, plus the other 4 to the left of the first displayed 4.

I don't have much of an idea what "equipment" is worth so I'm not gonna be much help.

That is one thing that can be very misleading.
What someone would expect to pay for something in one place can be totally out of line in another place.

Since your a two stroke man anyway, put a 6v53 or 453 Detroit in it, one of those turbo engines would pull. I have a 353 in a one ton Chevrolet, not the fasted truck or the best pulling with only 98 Horsepower, but it will get you there, eventually.

2 stroke as in 2 powerstrokes lol. i drove it today. new GP system on a manual switch=). it started cold (40* outside with nghts into 30's) in about 3 cranks, after using GP about 45 seconds with no smoke except a little bit of the old white like any diesel does. front end is tight. motor is tight. imma haul a load with it in a day or two.
