I just turned 18 and can finally buy an Excursion. The one that I found that I like is a 2002 Limited Edition, 4x4, V10, accident/damage free, and has 124K some miles for $8990. Is this a good deal? I have some money saved up and a car that’s nice enough to trade in so payments are low (can’t afford an expensive car at 8 bucks an hour, lol). Hope to hear from the experts. PLEASE: no one telling me I should go for a diesel, I know what I want and a diesel would be a waste of money due to the fact I can easily walk to work. Thanks, Nick.
P.S. - anyone know how to upload a pic from your computer, no just attach a url?

First of all welcome, we have a good group around here, we even have another "young" enthusiast named Nick that's been around a long time....and my sons name is Nick too
Hi Nick,
It good to see that you have joined the forum. Welcome aboard.
I am no EXPERT. But I am a father with to sons older than you.
Now that you have chosen the Excursion you want, just remember that all dealers have a starting price and a selling price usually.
Also remember there's a lot of different cars that can be bought in the 9000.00 range. Also remember the Excursion will drink up an extra .75 cents an hour of your wages in gas. The V-10 gets 10-12.5 in the city and 13-16 on the Highway. This is something I'm sure you know already.
I have a 03 Limited 4x4 V-10 so I speak from experience.
Now it is nice to get and/or have what you want, so if you are sure this is what you want then seriously consider it. But do give some thought.
My gut feeling is a good buy on this 2002 Excursion Limited 4x4 in Excellent condition is 7500.00 max. Forget what the book says, one must go with what the market dictates.
Remember tires are quite expensive for this truck, about 600.00 for a mid-priced set of 10 ply tires.
One other thing Nick (and I'll turn this forum over to the rest of the "GANG") Nick don't make this trade by yourself, take an older "dude" who knows cars and fiance with you on your first MAJOR purchase, like your DAD, or maybe your Grandfather. Also I might add read, read, read, other threads on this forum on what to look for when buying an Excursion.
Hey guy best of luck and once again thanks for joining the fourm.

I don't drive that often. so it's a complete waste of almost 4 grand to get a diesel with probably 180K+ miles. The V10 is a good engine and will last long, not as long as a diesel. Maybe I'll look into a diesel conversion once the truck is paid off though.....probably a cummins 6BT
This message is to UrbanXX: I appreciate your opinion, Yes, I'm sure this is what I want. I know my wage is low, but I have been saving money since I was 10, so I will not become short on money (have plenty saved for emergencies). As for gas mileage, I am familiar with the V10's fuel mileage, but I will save $2000-$4000 not buying the diesel. Plus, I don't live far from work, so I usually bike or walk. I probably put on 7-8 thousand miles a year. As for taking someone with me, I found the car in autotrader, it's 326 miles from my zip. Any idea on how I get get my dad to negotiate with them? He can't take the time off, and I cant either. I am going to talk to the dealer by phone and have it shipped here (have money save for that too). Don't worry, I have gotten the car-fax, talked to the salesmen, researched the dealer's history/background, and had the car inspected by an individual party and everything came out fine. Thanks, Nick. Hope you can come up with an idea.
post the vin so someone can run an oasis????? the only bad about the oasis is it only shows what repairs were done at the dealer....everybody agree? BUT if it had an extended warranty you might get lucky and see what is in its pre-100k mile past. with 124k on the truck there is plenty that has been done, or will need to be done...ball joints come to mind, I'm sure there are a lot more things.... If it were me it would be nice to know if something has already been dealt with or if I should expect to be dealing with it in the near future.
also to add to what Urban said........I agree get your dad involved and remember (look on ebay/auto trader, etc) there are tons of cars/trucks for sale including Ex's........they (the dealer/private party) need YOU to buy that truck A LOT more than you need to buy that truck........its a buyers market right now. even if you think the truck is perfect, tear it apart and point out every flaw and make them come down on the price. An hour of good arguing--call it negociating will save you A LOT more than anyone here makes in an hour.
I'm only 29 but I got screwed a few times when I was your age...........now I'm heartless and ruthless when buying cars..........remember for every $100 less you pay that is 12 hours less you don't have to work to pay off your truck. Good luck......Go get em tiger
Sorry for the second message XHunter. The excursion is 326 miles from my zip, and I cant drive down just to look at it. Any idea on how I could talk 'em down over the phone? Should I have 'em send me a crapaload of pics of everything I can think of? If I do buy it, I'm gonna have it shipped (already have the money for that).

I'll need every ones input on this, between all of us I'm sure we've bought a couple hundred cars...so what everyone's ideas?
btw what part of the country are you in....
well without spending two hours this is where I'd start. You don't have to share exact $ amounts with us if you don't want to, so don't feel like you have to:
Get this info together:
Find5-10 of the equvilant ie Ex on Auto trader in the same area SE, NE, Mid West or with in 1k miles etc.. close to same miles v10 4x4, same trim etc...color shouldn't matter to much. What are the price ranges that they are listed at. where does "your" Ex fall in the price range
go to kbb what is the average trade in on "your" Ex......the dealer paid less
what did carfax say?....how long has this guy had the truck, if it is months he needs to get rid of it and will be more likely to let the truck go or has he had it for 2 weeks.
Is he taking you car on trade? how is that going to work, if so what is he basing the price on. dealers go by Black Book values (lower that KBB).

Bad idea. You REALLY need to put your own eye ***** on it in person.
The most effective way to negotiate is to be ready and willing to walk away. (And you'll probably have to at least once.)
Another effective thing is to just say to their price that "That's not good enough." but don't say what is. They will often get to a price even lower than you had in mind and you would never get that low if they already know much you will spend.
I live in upper michigan (it's far from everything), ther car is for sale in the upper part of Illinois. The suggested KBB trade-in value is $6,205.00, that's if the car is in excellent condition. The prices in that area range from $8500 to $11000 (checked 6 ex's) with around 115K+ miles. Considering the KBB trade in was $6205, I doubt they gave the person more than $5500 for the trade. A lot of other people are saying a 2002 Ex with 100K+ miles should sell for $6500-$8500, those prices are from reading a couple personal reviews online for what people paid. You think talking 'em down to around $7500-$8000 is good? right now I have an '02 escape that they wouldnt give me jack $&!% on for a trade, so I'm thinking I should talk 'em down as low as possible, then sell my escape on my own for $3500-$4500 and put that towards the Ex's payments. (My escape is in good mechanical condition-only 74500 miles-but it has hail damage from 3 years ago.) Once again, I appreciate everyone for their help.

I had it checked by a private party, and everything checked out, no accidents, or rust, or damage. Still think I should fly down or something to personally pay them and look at the truck right before the purchase?
