AOD-AODE-5speed
Well here it is.. I'm thinking of going through a change with my truck.
I currently have a AOD and don't get me wrong I like this tranny but I was looking at the AODE for the electronic shift control and other available upgrades for it. I know that with the AODE I'm gonna have to get the computer and all that and it's gonna be a pain in the @$$ to do the swap. Then there was the 5speed, this would be easier and with total shift control but I'm just not really sure if I want a standerd or not. Don't get me wrong I like the AOD it's a good tranny but I'm going to have to rebuild it soon so I'm just looking at some other options. By the way the truck is an 86 4X4 with EFI. I am however going to convert to MAF during the rebuild so this is why I was thinking of the AODE.

5 speed conversion is a fair amount of work and expense unless you are really wanting a manual trans. Automatics are easier on the drivetrain, so if you're not commited to rowing your own, stay auto.
These people sell beefed transmissions. (did I already answer you in the Clutch/trans section???)
I don't know the specifics of the change from AOD to AODE to 4R70W, but they might be able to provide some input.

Too many drawbacks to autos, I will always pick a standard if given a choice.
The 5spd conversion is easy and the expense will be mostly related to your resourcefulness. I managed to do my conversion for about $50 and got a bunch of other nice stuff out of the deal as well.
