84 engine issue?

Hello everyone - been a bit since posting here. I recently purchased an '84 F150 with the 300 I6 from a local. It's mated to a 4-speed standard and the np265 transfer case. Recently the harmonic balancer seperated from itself and had it replaced. Since then the engine temp runs a little warm and recently the oil pressure gauge is reading low and high at times, but staying within the "normal" reading field. I know how to drive a manual but also the rear likes to give a nasty kickback when taking off every now and then. I'm also dripping oil from somewhere but the dip reads full - it's dripping off the crossmember and the oil pan.

I'm pullin my hair out since I really don't want to ditch this truck since I bought it specificaly for this engine/tranny combo.

The harmonic balancer was replaced, so was the timing checked? As far as the oil pressure guage, the sending units are famous for going bad or getting a little speck of dirt in the opening of the sending unit. I would get a real guage and hook it up. I would save the oil leak problem till you get the more serious stuff fixed.

Seems like all the gauges are sort of "maybe we will work today" mentality. Oil leak, check oil pressure sending unit as mentioned above by Franklin 2. It is on the drivers side of the block. Also look and see if power steering is leaking. My 84 has been through all of the above.

I haven't checked the timing as I don't have a timing gun. I'll give the sending unit a check in the morning. The sending line out of the ps unit is loose like the bead is cracked or whatever but I don't think it's leaking(I could be wrong). The truck does need a tune up but i've never heard of these things resulting from a lack of a tune up.

ok - borrowed a timing gun from a neighbor and the timing is spot on. Is there the possibility the cold weather is doing funky things? It's been in the low 30s/high 20s since I bought it.

This is pretty normal stuff for a TWENTY-FOUR year old truck.

My '85 leaks oil from the valve cover & rear main and it only has 83000 on it.

Has the exhaust manifold worked loose yet? Standard item.

Rear main? Standard item.

Running warm? Non-standard, these usually have a big enough radiator. Do the usual checks, including glazed fan belts that slip without making noise, t-stat, etc.

Oil pressure? Standard for gauge to go wacky. No lifter noise? You're good. Do the suggested fix, either new sender, new sender w/idiot light, or real gauge.

Which trans? Granny first? Are you talking about wheel hop when you take off with half or more throttle? Somewhat normal, especially in the low first.

Don't get discouraged. The basics are sound, the little stuff does drive you nuts, but remember, it's little stuff.

Good luck with it.

yea really lol. The hop goes away if I start off in 1st instead of 2nd, but 1st is set so high that I usualy start in 2nd wich is about medium range(I think). I think a full tune up might solve some of these problems. The belts are starting to wear since the edges are cracked(something else on the to do list).

I love every square millimeter of this pickup and want to eventualy get it back to factory stock, but I need to fix these things first.

Are you saying first is granny, good for 10 mph or so max?

Starting out in granny and short-shifting to 2nd will help your clutch and eliminate the problem, and costs nothing....

yup - any higher then 10mph sounds like it's ready to bust. Also within the last 12 hours I get a tipping noise from the engine(probly the oil gumming up but I dunno). The sound increaces with speed but doesn't do anything special to hinder drivability.
