It has been a while sence I have posted, but have not had any problems.
But, now my Water Pump is shot. I just wanted to get some input as to what Water Pumps to stay away from if any. I am also changing the belt and tensioner pulley. Anything else I should change while there?
Go to Ebay, look up NORTHERN AUTO PARTS and get the BRAND NEW AIRTEX pump, the only way to go!!!! don't spend your time and money to install a reman pump-it takes the same amount of time to install a new one!!
While you are at it get the dual alternator upper radiator hose.
It routes itself around the outside of the belt.
That way you can change the belt in the future without having to remove the upper hose.
Credit goes to PaysonPSD for this picture.
So that is why the alternator bracket is shaped like that. That what I figured, but that is the first picture I have seen. It looks a lot better than going through the belt.
This brings up another question. In the info link for installing, it shows some very wide/strong looking clamps. Does anyone have a link for heavy duty hose clamps. My local autoparts and HD just have the crappy ones.
In the last month I replaced my auto transmission 4wd, all drive shafts, right front wheel bearing, seals, and water pump.
I bought a NEW water pump from autozone. I also bought my wheel bearing from Autozone. But,, the bearing was Timken. I have worked with Timken for many years and they build quality bearings. The timken was $100 cheaper than Motocraft, and $100 more than the generic autozone.
The water pump is pretty straight out job. But warning the big nut behind the fan is a to get off and you must get it off before you pull the pulley / pump. There is a special tool for this job.
7.3 Ford Diesel water pump change information
<o></o> Bolts on thermostat 6MM 1MM pitch about 25 mm long Hardened. Note they have locktite hit head with smack smartley with a hammer to break seal before attempting to remove or bolts will break. If you plan to do this I would suggest you buy NEW bolts for the thermostat housing before you pull the pump in the event you break one.
<o></o> O Ring seal needed on bottom pump extension. O ring seal used on thermostat top housing
<o></o> Wrench for Fan is 1 7/8 “ or 48 MM Wrench for holding pulley is 54 MM. Must use both wrenches to remove fan. This is the most difficult part of the pump change OEM part # 27141,, but not Ford OEM is the brand name.
The wrench for the fan is very THIN so it will fit. The second wrench attaches to the pulley bolt heads to prevent it from turning. YOU WILL NEED THIS TOOL.

Note the coolant you use is important on the diesel. I use Fleet RED coolant for heavy trucks in my 7.3 This coolant exceeds the ford coolant and comes preloaded with the additive package on installation.
I have photos also,, if you would like the photos send me your email because I don't know how to post photos on this site.
make sure you purchase a coolant filter system from Diesel Site, it will help save on abnormal wear in the water pump
Filter? What filter? First I heard. I figured at 144,000 miles on the first pump was pretty good. But If i can make it last longer!.. Thank you for the info. Any specific type.

What I fail to understand is the reason that Ford decided to make two different styles of upper radiator hose, with the most common application the pass through type hose.
DOH!!!
