Was wondering if there is school of thought of when you might want to replace the steel brake lines to avoid any brake failures?
Are there any specific runs that might be more susceptible to failure than others? A buddy of mine has an 11 year old dodge ram. He blew out a rear steel brake line. The shop told him that this was a common one to go out because of where it was located.
Just watch them. All 92-up TownCars and such rust thru. Seen several and have a 96 waiting for me to repair it. Dad's 89 F150 rusted out inside of the retaining clip that holds the line to the frame and all of my friends 88 Ranger 4x4 had to be replaced.
They should have used stainless tubing for such a safety related part!!
The left front brake line on my '98 started rusting right above where it attaches to the caliper. There is a piece of rubber around the hose and where the metal fitting is swaged to the hose. looks like moisture collects there and started rusting.
i did my 89 when it was 13 years old, it started to drip. did out 96 EXP last year, looked bad, but was not leaking. normal place to start leaking is on the long run under the drivers seat to rear wheel are where it clips to the frame. lots of water and salt spary there. between the front wheels is least common. over the rear axle would be the "next" common spot
Really it all depends on where you live. Any metal open to the road is going to rust if you live in the right climate. I have a '92 Grand Marquis that spent most its life in IL and all the lines running along the frame are rusting. My '97 F150 does not have one spec of rust because we just don't have that problem here.

Man you got that right, lived in California, no rust - moved to Minnesota, lots and lots of rust.
