I was just reading the "how to properly paint a Y block??" thread and I got interested in the different colors of blocks you guys brought up. Anyway to the point I have a 239 Y block that I painted Ford blue but I just don't like it at all I would like to do something a little more era appropriate. The 272 that originally came out of my truck was yellow and the 239 that I will be putting in my truck was originally a cream or ivory color. I kind of wanted to paint it the yellow that my original motor was. I noticed that POR-15 had engine enamel in thier line of products but I just didn't know if it actually works or what the yellow looks like once painted. I the pamphlet that I have it looks to be about the right shade of yellow but it's always different once in person. Anyone try this stuff? I put the undercoating on my chassis and was very pleased so I thought how bad could the enamel be.
Here are a few pic of the colors of the 272 and 239
The oil pump is from the 272 (sadly enough thats all I have left of the original color of the 272) and the front motor mount is from the 239. I believe though that the 239 came from a '54 Crestline car.
Can't address appearance of Por 15 yellow paint; however, bout 2 1/2 yrs. ago painted engine using Por 15 Ford Blu. May be too soon to tell, so far, it's held up very well, better than some of the other paints used in the past. Engine was dipped at time of rebuild, masked and then used Marine Clean, or simular product, to remove any remaining grease and or dirt. Used a spray gun and applied couple coats of the Por 15 paint. As noted, pleased with results. For info purposes, if not familiar with Por 15 paint, suggest including container of their solvent, useful for clean up and diluting paint if necessary, although I don't dilute their paint.
I was dissapointed with the por15 engine yellow on my yblock. It gelled up after only a few hours and was unusable. I took it back and the supplier said that this does happen, and that air must have gotten to it. I have used plastic coat since then and like it much better.
