is anyone running their 292 on lp. considering a conversion and looking for insight as to what to expect. i have contacted gotpropane.com and it seems they could help out.
It was Great 30 years ago when propane was cheep. now its high.
One dedicated advantage to running propane is that the engine stays very, very clean. like new in fact.
I know people who use natural gas (very simlar) in the oil fields in ND. They get it free as a byproduct of oil drilling.
However they cant tow, start the engine, or Run it at temps below 20+F.
Great Idea but usless unless one gets fuel for free.
You know, I have been considering a dual fuel set up on my 292 for quite some time. Propane is about $2.50/gallon around here. (last time I checked) I have been thinking about this system: Propane Conversion Kits : Available Kits
They have a dual fuel kit that should work well on the 292.
I have been checking Craigslist and about once a month someone on there has a DOT legal tank for sale that holds from 30-80 gallons.
I like the idea of propane for a vehicle that I won't be driving every day. The oil never gets dirty and the plugs will last for a long time!
Propane NEVER goes bad. Also, there's never a line or a wait for propane around here.
I think I'd probably only fill a big tank maybe once every three months or so. With th edual fuel system I could switch it back and forth whenever I needed to.
There's no real economical reason to do it. The system would cost upwards of $1000. You're going to use a little more propane, offsetting the slightly cheaper price.
If you wanted to go propane exclusively, you need to put special hard valves and seats and use fairly high compression to get the power back.
(you get most of it back but you couldn't switch back to gasoline if you do that)
I owned a 63 f100 with a 292 engine. When i bought it it ran on lpg or gasoline with a switch. If you want to have fun use gasoline, for economic reason or on highway you can use LPG. It really brings down your power. But thats only my experience. Here in the Netherlands almost everyone with us cars run on LPG. Maybe with a proper confersion kit it will work. And not to forget; if you want to do it right, you need hardened valve seats because there is no lead in LPG to lubricate your valves and seats. But modern fuel also is without lead, so it will be better to have hardened seats anyway.
