65 Hood Hinge Help

I have a newly aquired 65 that needs some work. My first task is getting the hood to sit right. It closes in the front and looks good, however the rear of the hood is not sitting down properly. It's both pulled away from the cowl and isn't down far enough. I can tell the hinges are tweaked, at least a little bit, so I'm hoping that is most of the problem. You can push the rear of the hood down manually after it's latched and it gets slightly better, but then the hood won't unlatch until you pull it back away.

I read on here that one can remove the springs to see how the hood sits without them. If all is well then the hinges are bad. So...how do I remove the springs?? Any tips other than BAP (Big A$$ Pliers)? Thanks! I'm sure I'll be talking to you guys a lot...I've previously used this forum for my 2004 F150.

It could also be cab mounts and rubbers sagging, making the hood stick up in the rear.
I've propped the hood up and pulled the springs before using a long sturdy screwdriver and a section of rope with help from a buddy to yank on the rope while I pryed the spring.

Hood sticking up in the rear? You know what happened? The hood flew up, stretching the hinges.

This is a very common occurance on 1961/79 Ford trucks. 1967/72's were the worst offender, did this when they nearly brand new!

The hood is too heavy for the puny hinges and springs, peeps slam the hood down.

Slamming down that hood bends the panel the hood latch bolts to, so the safety catch barely works.

Sooner or later the hood flies up. If you're lucky, it wont hit the leading edge of the cab's roof.

New, original hinges are available, I found some just recently.

If interested, I'll type the info again, search for new springs, which I haven't done before.

I have a new pr of repop hinges...never been on a truck...look exact as OE except not correct color...would have to reuse your springs as well...but those are easy to swap...
Im on vacation till Sunday but will make you a heckuva deal on them as I need the space more then the parts...removing the springs and reinstalling isnt too hard..IF you have a good large vise and an able bodied helper...i posted about R&ring these a few months ago as I had to swap mine...I also have so decent OE hinge for sale as well...drop me an email and I will tell whats the skinny on things...

Seem to recall FTE member mentioning the hinge pin may eventually stretch/weaken and a method of repair is to remove the hinge, heat the hinge pin and reset using a press. Also, may want to check condition of the cowl seal, perhaps hardened and no longer acting as a seal, although, seems to me the cowl seal is fairly hard to begin with, appears to act more like a bumper than a gasket or seal.

Replaced the cowl seal on 65 and it's taking its time to seat. Would certainly look into new replacement hinge if able to get a good deal. I have a set of used replacements stored away, considering using the heat and press repair on them, seems fairly simple, although assume one would have to use caution, have a 20 ton press and it would not look too cool if I had to stand on the front bumper to get enough leverage to lift the hood.
