I need to build a reliable yet very powerful motor for a truck that will be desert racing. I want to go with a stroker kit probably a 408. I want to put new aluminum heads. new intake manifold and all the other goodies that go into building a motor. I want to put this engine together myself. However what I don't know is how to figure out what parts work with each other and what are good combinations. Also are there any little tricks to preparing the block. Fuel injection or carb. I am not worried about fuel economy and not to worried about price. I know its going to be expensive any way you look at it. Any suggestions?
efi for sure, there is a book called how to build small block fords. ive heard this is a good source for matching parts. finding a good builder is also very important if reliability is your concern.
Check out these engines. At the opening of this site they have a sale on 3 valve 4.6s for under $7k.... but I digress. For the 351 based 392, you can get some ideas here for a build, or buy one and paint it a different color and claim it as your own. Click on the number under the engine and get specific component info, most importantly cam info. Very handy methinks:
personally i feel the ford crate motors are overpriced. you can find many other builders around the nation that can build a motor for less and give you everything you want. including reliability.
That helps a little but does anybody know if there are any tricks to do to the blocks. Are there oil passage ways that have to be bigger or anything. Also has anybody done any combinations themselves and know how well they work.
The only "trick" is that you have to notch the bottom of the cylinders for rod clearance and you have to be very carefull with head and piston selection. The pistons are going to have a shorter skirt. Some pistons for strokers have a wrist pin location that intersects with the oil ring. Check out the D.S.S and Coast High Performance web sites. They both specialize in strokers. You can buy a rotating stroker assembly, stroker short block, clearanced blocks, ect.. They are plenty of books available (Barns and Noble, Books A Million) but I would just call the people that specialize in building them. Write down all your questions so you dont forget anything and just give them a call
If your in it to win and dont care about cost the fastest way is to pay the piper to build it for you. My brother inlaw used to race and win in late model stock cars. He told me that he would spend $25,ooo an a motor that some guy would build for him and he did`nt even know what was inside accept that it was the best of the best. But if you wan to do it yourself look to the Ford Racing catalog for siamese blocks and forged cranks and heads that would have to be machined to your specs. But if your smart you can build a decent motor for about $5ooo that will satisfy your need for speed/longevity.
the $5000 route is more of what im looking for. I want to do it myself just because I can and like doing it. I have Total Performance here that will build me a complete motor for about $6500 or less but I just feel like doing for my own personal knowledge. I think I will check out the books and see what they have to say.

I know a guy that dirt races and he said his engines were $25,000. He won all the time, too. Scott Bloomquist.
You should really check out Fordstrokers.com. Woody can set you up with a 408 kit w/ block and Jay Allen and he can give you some really good advise on what set-ups will work best for your needs. Jay can fix you up with heads and he custom grinds cams.
Woody is based in Ca, so depending on how close to you he is, you may be able to do a pick up and save on shipping.

I TOTALLY understand your desire to build it yourself and understand how all the pieces interact with each other. I have been learning engine theory and building my own engines since I was a teenager and that was forty years ago. I have studied all the books and done my own experimenting although nothing so fancy as dynoing anything.
The best tool that I have gotten my hands on is Desktop Dyno. It is not as accurate as building engines and testing components on an actual dyno, but it is a GREAT tool for getting an idea how different components interact with each other and effect the torque and horsepower band.
