MAF upgrade

I searched all around the interweb and couldnt find an answer. Though it probably is hidden somewhere.

My buddy has a 92 5.0 F-150. Im trying to get the leg work done to swap it over to mass air. So far i have found a 96 F-150 Eddie Bauer in a salvege yard with the wiring for a MAF in an F-150.

My question is this:
Our furture plans involve going to an HO cam and gt-40p heads. How do i get around the issue of a different firing order??

Do i need to swap computers over when i do the Mustang HO cam or could i lengthen the injector harness and switch the injector firing order around when we do the major swapping? Will the ECM plug in be the same for the F-150 and mustang to do that swap easily? Would it be advisable to just go mustang MAF and not bother with the Eddie Bauer in the salvage yard?

Thanks for any help.

isn't the truck cam better geared for a low end truck and is it a roller motor?

You don't want parts from a 96 because it's OBD-II, which is a significant change from OBD-I. Too much of a change to make the swap worthwhile, even if you need mass air.

Most people just re-pin the injectors to get the firing order they need.

A truck mass air swap would be much easier than trying to use a mustang wiring harness and computer because the computer is in a different location. You will probably have to do a lot of surgery on the harness to get it working.

The HO is a roller cam and makes better power everywhere and is a very cheap upgrade. The F-150 block may or may not be a roller. If it has the bosses in the center of the block for the spider hold down that holds the dog bones down, the transition will be a breeze. But if it is a non roller block ill have to spring for the hydraulic roller conversion.

Now the 96 had a 5.0 it wasnt till 97 that the body changed and it got the modular OHC engines. Im pretty sure that is right. 92-96 is all the same look. Are you sure it went to OBD-II? And with everything mostly OBD-II these days im almost wondering if it would be worth it. Because my OBD-II in my 2000 Mustang GT can detect a cylinder misfire and pinpoint it. Also i think the processing power is alot better.

I didnt think about re-pinning. Than would work.

Yep, 96 is OBD-II. Find a 94-95 5.0L, they are roller cam, and mass air trucks factory with OBD-I.

You can't add a MAF meter to the SD system so you need a computer right away, and the tranny in the truck will determine what one is suitable. If the truck has an AOD or manual tranny use a mustang EEC, if it has an E4OD you have to use a truck computer. You'll have to add wiring for the MAF meter and the sequential injector wiring, so you can pin it for the non-HO firing order now and change it later when the cam is upgraded. If you use the mustang computer feed both O2 sensor inputs from the single sensor, this will avoid a common problem where the computer fights itself because the O2 sensors banks and injector banks no longer match. Using the '96 Bronco makes the job much bigger, you'll probably have to swap the complete powertrain wiring harness and possibly part or all of the dash cluster wiring. The OBD-2 system also has a lot more sensors so you'll have to add these or figure out a way to defeat them, and that will involve some sensor eliminators and/or a tuner. More $$.

Its a bone stock 1992 Super cab 2wd with an automatic, so should that be the E4OD? And is there a write up here? I looked around and found a poll for a write up but never found the actual one.

Yep, my 94 4x4 is 5.0L with E4OD. My dad has a 95 5.0L 2wd with AOD-E. Both are MAF.

The writeup hasn't happened yet.. though there are other articles on this around the web including those found here..
custom air intake and MAF conversion for a 1988 Ford F150
Ford Fuel Injection

You have to determine with certainty what tranny is in the truck, look at the drivers door pillar for the tranny code.

Here ya go! Chew on this for a while: Speed Density to Mass Air Conversion. F150, Bronco, Mustang. It's kinda like a word maze where point A =starting w/MAP truck and your trying to get to point B =mod to MAF w/ all the bell & whistles working truck. Points C thru Z are Various examples of how you shouldn't, wouldn't, couldn't and may or may not arrive at point B. Although last time I checked, nobody has documented an example of dots actually connecting A to B. A lot of people attempt this mod expecting a cakewalk, but after getting knee deep into it the level of difficulty starts leaning away from "cakewalk" and a more towards..... I don't know, maybe "The Bataan Death March". The # of starters & # of those that complete the journey are probably about the same ratio!

Okay i went back to the yard today and saw that the build date on the Eddie Bauer was 6/95. While i was there i also found a 3G alternator in a Taurus and a Lincoln Mark VIII with a healthy fan waiting to be plucked. So Saturdy morning im going to be getting busted knuckles at the salvage yard. I really think that if i pull the whole engine harness and get the computer from the 95 JY truck that this will actually go pretty smooth. The lengths will be exact and it will fall into place instead of splicing and re-pinning and what not. However, if the trannys arent the same i may opt to leave the computer behind. In reality im still going to need all the wiring.

I did run across all three sites that were mentioned in the past few posts. Ford Muscle .com requres a subscription to view the write up and its $20 a year.

That's right on the line between the 95 and 96 model year. That could be either. I would check it before you pull anything and see if it has the OBD-II connector under the dash or the OBD-I connector behind the airbox.

I tried looking at my buddies tranny from under the truck to see if it said what it was but i got nothing. The door still sticker said it was transmission code "T". So ill try to dig up what that means. I guess as long as the JY truck is the same im in the clear.

According to this it has the E4OD tranny

The 92 will have a roller 5.0 in it. Unless its been swapped out. I found it easier to just buy the kit with an overlay wiring harness and be done with it.. Also about the firing order. I bought my cam from COMP. and I ask them about the firing order. They told me to go ahead and install it. When its running 1000 rpms or 5000 rpms how much will it be off.
Honestly I can tell its off at all.
