After a 1300km run to the north. Climbing a moderate hill, the engine started losing power, and I smelled burning oil. Pulled over and checked oil. Nothing on dipstick. Put in 5 litres of oil and ran another 20km, stopped and checked oil. Nothing on dipstick. Started engine, looked underneath and oil flying everywhere from back of engine. Shut off, and towed for 200 km. Great start for winter work eh? Question, without pulling transmission etc, how do I find out what type of rear seal is in there. Or, is it possible that a camshaft plug/cap let go? Either way, 5 litres of oil in 20km is a baaaad leak. any suggestions?
That really sucks.I can't really help you except to tell you that a blown rear seal on these trucks is very uncommon from what I've read on here. Someone more knowledgable than me will chime in soon.Good luck
Well, I had a really bad oil leak not too long ago that turned out to be a cracked turbo. But mine wasn't as bad as yours. The first thing you will be asked about your leak is, are you sure it's not coming from above, from the top of the motor. If it was it would run down the back of the motor and would make you think "rear main seal." That's the first thing I thought of on mine. If you are loosing that much oil that quickly, it's gotta be coming out under a lot of pressure. That makes me think High Pressure Oil Pump -- there are lots of folks here much more knowledgeable than me that I am sure will be along directly. Meanwhile, I would go ahead and check to see if that leak is originating at the top of the motor so that you will be prepared to answer that question. Look down from the top and see if you see oil in the valley.
I am betting on HP oil rail plug they make one helluva mess had to replace left front 2 years ago I also thought rear main was shot. Aint nothing under my truck ever gonna rust though.
Problem is, I don't know Shiite. Only the little I've learned in one month, and that's very limited.
Thanks though, that means a lot.
Same boat as you less than a year ago...I have learned tons from here and learn more everyday....I dont think it stops....I try and help as much as I can....If I cant I end up searching for the persons problem just to ease my mind so I know it for future reference.
