Any info about either motord goog or bad will be hopeful
If I were purchasing a new SD, I would select the V10 engine. There is a greater selection of aftermarket "goodies" for the V10 versus the V8. You get the needed additional TQ at a minimal extra cost of $600? Also, i would guess that the V10 gets only 3-4 MPG less than the V8 under normal driving conditions and similar MPG under hauling / towing conditions.
I have the 5.4L V8 and do very little hauling / towing at this time. Therefore, it was the right choice for me. If I had it to do again, I would select the V10.
I had the 06 F250 5.4, good motor carried alot of weight and ran fine, but for alot of towing I really ate the gas bescause you have to give it alot of RPMS. If you are looking at gas motors based upon my exprience I would just go for the V10. Or a new PSD but not the 5.4.
I'd go with the V10. Only $600 difference and over 50hp and almost 100 more lb ft tq. Empty the V8 will more than likely get better mpg though. Loaded mpgs will be similar espcially if you get a larger CC.
As far as sound goes the V10 has a unique sound, different from a V8. A small sacrafice for a lot more power.
In SDs there are more bolt-on parts for the 6.8l. 9.5 times out of 10 a part designed for a 5.4l F-150 will not crossover to the 5.4l SD. As of now bolt-ons for 08'up SDs for either eninge are slim. Mainly just cat-backs available. Tuners are available for either motor. I expect the aftermarket to evetually catch up with the new trucks. Tuning and another muffler can really help performance.
I'd buy an F350 with whatever engine you can find nearby. If there are two trucks, one with a V8 and one with a V10 I'd get the V10, but just having weight in the bed, either will do the job without a hiccup.
I would look at the 'whole package'. I think it much harder to find a 'good, clean truck' than it is to just find one with the engine you want. If you were to find a truck that was in great shape, clean, and you fell in love with it, but it was a 5.4, there's no way I'd hold out for a V10. You may hold out forever. I was able to find several very nice, clean, incredible SDs with the 5.4 in my area, where as the V10s were all work trucks that had been beat to holy heck, and or used very roughly and hard. Based on the needs you are describing, I'd find the truck you want, and take whichever engine it comes with.
If however, you were buying off a lot, or ordering your truck through a dealer, get the V10, why not?

Reason: misspelling
Don't forget guys the gas motors are "modular" and a V10 is in essence a V8 with 2 extra cylinders. All those V8 aftermarket goodies, with in reason, could work on a V10. I did plenty mods to my '99 V10 and she ran great with plenty of power. Around town gas mileage wasn't bad like 11-13, towing it would hit single digits easily. If you can't get a PSD, the V10 is the better choice.
