coming out of a 2000 F-150 with the 5.4, i found thaat engine pretty gutless..esp. compared to the 99 F250 SD with a V10 i used to have...
the V10 was WAY more powerful.. esp. seat of the pants driving..
i now have a 03 250 SD CC/4X4 V10 running 4" lift and 35" and this truck feels like its lost alot of oomph compared to the 2WD V10 i had before. i cant imagine how this same truck would run with a 5.4 Triton..
not to mention the milage differnce isnt really that far about..in fact i bet the 5.4 might be worse given its harder to turn the bigger tires..
food for thought...
plus who doesnt want a fender tag that says "V10"... hahaaha...
One thing to point out is gearing. 3.73 and 4.10 are offered for the V8 and 4.10 and 4.30 are offered for the V10. If you compare a V8 with 3.73 VS a V10 with 4.30's there will be huge difference in performance.
I have a 03 V10 with 3.73's and I can tell you those gears are way too high for a truck this heavy.
No wonder why in 05 Ford did away with those gears in V10's
for gas engines, get the 10. If there is any mileage diffrence, it will be minimal. I have a v10 and use it like a truck should be used. I know a few people that have the 5.4 in their trucks and they all say the same thing. Great motors, good for running empty, but dont pull a load and expect to be able to pass somebody or get out of the slow lane. Besides, when towing heavy loads, I hear the v10 gets better mpg, because it works less hard than the 8.
For problems, I have not heard of any on the newer motors, I have less than 100k on my v10 truck so there is nothing to brag about there, but no problems yet. My neighbor has a F350 with a 5.4 and has 240k on it, all original, BUT he does not work it. Its just a commuter truck with the occasional light duty tow.
If I had to do it all over again, and was not looking for a loud, stinky diesel, I would get the v10 again.
I have an 02 F250 reg cab 5.4, 6 spd with the 3.73 gears. I orderd it this way because most of the time it runs around empty and that way the set up is more than adequate. If I load it up (camper) and it starts to bog down (up steep hills) I just drop it down a gear and all is well. Nothin' beats a manual trans.
