Exclamation Charging wire from alternator...

While I change out my alternator tomorrow I was thinking about replacing/upgrading my charging line from the back of the alternator.
I have a few questions:
-Where does the wire run to? Straight to the batteries?
-If I replace the OEM wire will the warning light in dash still work properly?
-Does anyone have a wiring diagram?

Thanks!

It goes into the main engine wiring harness, and then across the top of the engine, into the PASSENGER side battery. What most do when upgrading the amperage is to run a second 4ga wire off the same post to the other battery. I did just this when i put in my 220a alternator the other day.

What about running an extra ground off of it? I believe kwik added one to his. Seems to make sense to me.

That is a good idea Chris. There is nothing wrong with having more grounding.

The block is already grounded at the front, and at the rear of the passenger cylinder head, and through the motor mounts. But, i didnt see a need for it.

It seems like he went off an alternator mounting bolt to the battery. It would seem to me the shorter path would offer better charging at low rpm's, not that I think you'll have an issue with lower rpm's.

Electricity is going to take the path of least resistance. For instance, a short happens instead of all of it going through the smaller grounds, the brunt of it will go through the shortest, largest ground.

Kris, Did you get a shiny one, or did you go the powder coated route?

Seems like a lot of extra work when the driver's side battery is right there and the two batteries are connected in parallel with (I think) 1g cable.
Anyway, here is the cables that I put on my truck.

Yeah, i got the shiney one from DB. Sucks tho, has yours started to turn gold? from the heat i guess. Anyway yeah the ******* that helped me hook up the cables (who insisted on doing it for me) touched the hot cable to the alternator casing a few times, not shiney there anymore.

You're lucky he didn't fry any diodes on the rectifier.

A short of that kind, batteries directly to the case, won't kill the diodes.

They don't get "over-currented" or sustain a counter-EMF voltage spike.

Nah, mines still shiny. I disconnected the batts when I installed mine so I would not do any unplanned welding. I have a 6 inch scar on my front bumper from when I installed a new + battery cable set up last year and did said unplanned welding. doh!
