Amp Research Steps non operational

I have the amp research side steps to get in and out of the truck. Lately, they seems like they only work half the time. i know they work off the door light switch to activate. why do they only work some times and occasionally they stay down.

The door switch goes to ground when opened, most likely. One thing you might try is disconnecting the trigger wire for the steps and tapping them to ground. As it grounds then they should drop. As it's removed from ground and changes polarity, they should rise. If you have a DMM, you can watch the wire as you work the switch. Use the positive probe before any diodes and you should see 12v with the latch/switch closed, it should drop down to 2-3v after a few minutes (it's a power saving feature in the GEM). Then it should read a couple milivolts when the latch/switch is opened.

Repeat this process after the diodes. Your diodes could be shorted. If the voltages match up (closed, closed low volt and open), then you most likely have a problem with the controller.
