i have a 84 150 with a 300 in it and a 3spd wit granny and it has no power to it and i have to have it in 2nd going like 25 up every hill (and i live in pennsylania) so i want to put a 302in it and i was wondering if the trany transfer case and everything else would match up or what would i have to get?? please help thankyou
Yes a 302 will bolt in, but you should look at your gearing first because if an I6 won't push the truck a 302 certainly won't. There's a good chance you have 3.08 or 2.73 gears, a change to 3.55 would help immensely, and if you swap the 302 in you'll need 3.73-4.10 gears.
That truck should at least be able to do that even if you have 2.73's. I would say there is something not right with the engine causing poor performance. Is the truck original? ie, stock motor, tranny, rear end, etc. .

Thats what Im thinking. I know they geared alot of vehicles too high in that era, but I wouldnt swap an engine out with just 2 more cubes before I checked everything over. Check the timing, the fuel pressure, and the compression to see if the truck shows any faults. The 300 running correctly has better low end torque.
conaski: I once helped a buddy do a gear swap on a milddle 80s F100 with 300 & 4 speed overdrive combo that had 2.47 gears, In overdrive it was not happy even on level ground. so, this could be the problem through big hills in Penn.
A 84 300 may have the computer control system which among other things, controls the timing. Lots of things to go wrong with that system. I feel it's a cop out to recommend to everyone that they ditch this system and put a regular distributor in, but if it were mine that's what I would do.
If you do not have a vacuum line going to the dist, then you do have the computer.
