My wife's 2002 Explorer make a humming noise that I have not been able to identify. The noise is coming from the front of the vehicle. The humming sound seems to pulsate and get louder when going thru a curve. On the highway it seems to get louder between 50 and 75mph, and when coming to a stop. The Explorer has around 70,000 miles on it. I have since replaced the front brakes and struts. I am debating on changing the bearings, only because they are somewhat expensive. Has anyone had this problem? If so what was wrong? I appreciate any help THANKS!!!!
Yea its a common thing with the explorers, have someone ride on the passenger side and both you stick your head out the window and listen for what side it is.
It could be both but I doubt it, usually the passenger side goes first, takes the most abuse being on that side.
Yea they are pricey, new hubs about 150, used about 50 bucks. Either one comes with the anti lock sending unit/cable. I've had good luck with used ones myself, being a "2002" you might want a "new" one.
There is a way to do it that works on the sealed hub bearing assembly, get a large thread grease serk wrap it with several layers of teflon tape and push it into the ABS sensor pickup hole pump full of grease till it flows out of the seal front and rear and your good to go( reinsert sensor) did this on my 97 awd think its the same bearing. got this from this forum don't recall from who but it does work
Thanks for posting that, never heard of that or tried it but I will give it a shot next time I have the wheels off. They need grease before they start grinding metal!
I gotta one of them special grease needle's for the little cup type serk's, it might work great all by itself even. I think it will fit right in the sending unit hole, has gotta be real close to the same size.
if you take off the wheel and brake disc, you can turn the hub by hand and compare the two sides. sometimes hard to tell which one it is, sometimes it is more obvious. its not hard to change them out, but takes a little time. i did one front on a 2002 at 85k miles, other is still o.k. at 110k.
Is the sealed assembly on newer explorers or on the older ones too? I have a roar coming from my passenger side that started recently, and before I tear into it to find a sealed unit, I want to make sure. It is a 98 4x4 sport. Thanks guys.
we have a 96 4 x 4 and it has sealed bearing/ hub units. we have a 2002 4 x 4 and it has sealed bearing/ hub units at all 4 corners. the old and newer styles are not the same hub.
I think 96-2000 are the same part #s I'll check and get back to you.
turns out 95-2002 are the same but check with parts counter as there may be some variation with model
