Sorry for the double post...didn't see the diesel area until I posted in the Excursion section.....
Know some of the basics but possibly buying a 2000 Excursion diesel tomorrow and wanted to know what all I should look for. THIS WILL BE MY FIRST DIESEL.....Here is what I know of thus far:
7.3, Hypermax Stage 2 injectors, Garret GTP38R, 5 inch straight pipe, nitrous(with bottle heater), Hypermax intercooler, transmission, and Precision Industries torque converter, done by TSI in Addison, IL.,New batts. and cables in there, it has a new transfer case.
Mechanically sound, all work was done at 100k, truck has about 140k on it.
Know I am taking the nitrous out when I get it...so that won't be a problem so long as no damage has been done already. Guy is a diesel mechanic...so just want to get an idea of what to look for outside general maintenance...TIA
first, with that much work I woulda hoped he had a pyrometer on the exhaust gas temperatures...., gauges on modified engines are a must.... especially if you plan on pulling heavy with them. The pyrometer is more or less a real time monitor of engine load...and readings over 1200 degrees farenheight can be very bad for your engine.
There are Utube videos on how to buy a used powerstroke. Look at the valley pan, should e fairly clean and dry. If it is a 5 inch exhaust on an excursion its a custom bent job... nobody sells one commercially above 4 inch that I have found. Buying heavily modified engines is a crapshoot... most guys don't mod them then baby them.
Ditto Cris. Looked for it but couldn't find it. It's now in my favorites. Thanks, Ron.
CD, you now have possibly the best, most complete list of what to check before buying a PSD. If you have any questions about a specific item, ask it here and you will get good info. Also, Welcome to FTE!
Truck has aftermarket oil and trans temp gauges as well as a pyrometer and boost gauge. Just figured that would be automatically assumed with the rest of the mods

ChicagoDiesel glad we could help and welcome to FTE..good luck on your first diesel..your going to love it..if you have any question..feel free to ask...
One other stupid question.... what sort of gas mileage should I see with this setup and just how much more power will it have over my buddy's stock 97 F250?
the only stupid question around here is the one you never ask...with winter blend fuel already out..you will most likly see any thing from 15 to 18 MPG....you will smoke your buddies truck..should be pushing close to 400 HP with out the nitrous..although a DP tuner will make her run a lot better..

CD, I can understand why you felt that way but on here, accurate information is the only way that we can give accurate advise. Don't mean to offend anyone but when you assume, you do only one thing...............

Well just found out it has a BullyDog programmer. Now how in depth are these things? That is, can you adjust injector pulse width etc or does it have generic programming for the larger turbo/injectors?
Not sure on the model number as of yet. Picking it up around 12-2pm tomorrow now. Pretty sure I am going to just go ahead and get it (unless something is VERY wrong)...
Personally I would pass, it is nice to buy a modified vehicle but you also could be jumping into a money pit with repairs if they did not treat it right or mod it right. It makes it a little harder to work on if you don't know exactly how they did it with there own touch.
If you do get it add the DP-Tuner or Tony Wildman chip to really line the truck out.
