Question What to look for.......

Know some of the basics but possibly buying a 2000 Excursion diesel tomorrow and wanted to know what all I should look for. Here is what I know of thus far:

7.3, Hypermax Stage 2 injectors, Garret GTP38R, 5 inch straight pipe, nitrous(with bottle heater), Hypermax intercooler, transmission, and Precision Industries torque converter, done by TSI in Addison, IL.,New batts. and cables in there, it has a new transfer case.

Mechanically sound, all work was done at 100k, truck has about 140k on it.

Know I am taking the nitrous out when I get it...so that won't be a problem so long as no damage has been done already. Guy is a diesel mechanic...so just want to get an idea of what to look for outside general maintenance...TIA

How the nitrous is set up. I am not sure about working it on a diesel, but people who aren't familiar with it's use or were trained by watching the fast and furious can do some damage if the system allows it. A rule of thumb for gas motors is no more than 20hp per cylinder on a stock motor, I have to imagine that the diesel requires much less. If it's over a 100 shot, I would look for it being a wet system.

Size the guy up, with that kind of mods, did he rag on it? A new transfer case would indicate to me that the old one was broken. Take a look at the ujoints, are the yokes warped at all? Give the driveshafts a wiggle, do the pinions move? Does he have big mud tires on it? I dislike buying a used 4x4 from someone who's played in the mud a lot, so I am cautious about the drive line.

ReAX those are some good ideas on the drive line. I am with you since the T-Case was replaced it may have been raced at sometime.

I wouldn't really worry too much about the NOS and damage to engine. These 7.3's are pretty tough and there are a few I have seen run 120 shot or better. definately look at the driveline and definately concentrate on the tranny when speaking with him. I see no mods to the tranny. These trannyys stock are fair but with those mods it can fail fairly easy. There are ways to make the tranny bullet proof but get as much info as you can and post here. Hopefully it will have the BTS tranny. They are Massive. If it is stock I would worry a little.

This is my buddy thats looking to get this truck, the trans was built by a local trans shop with a performance background and is well respected in the area. Sounds like it may have been built/upgraded with parts from hypermax? I am not too familiar with this brand as I am not into diesels, anyone have some insight on this brand?

Hypermax makes great quality stuff. I have some of their stuff on mine right now. H2e rocks BTW

Try to get a "specifi" list of mods and we can go over them. It sounds like it is quality stuff so far. How bad has it been driven?
