turn signals

I've been putting off going with the after market turn signal assembly I've had laying around; had hoped to find a 50's original from car or truck. Anyway decided to mount my assembly to the steering column. I used brackets I cut off the donor wiper assembly, welded to my "modified" column. Now needs painting, am using rattle can box liner, seems tough and hides imperfections with a satin finish.

Looking good!!

I sure like your trucks color. It makes me dream about doing some bodywork on my multicolored morphodite.

removing chrome finish

I've searched forum , for methods to remove chrome finish, but can't seem to turn it up. I want to paint the turn indicator body color. Can I just scuff finish and etch prime ?

Hi Tip49

There is a product that DuPont makes that is normally intened to "etch" body parts to roughen them up before painting. It's basically an acid wash and it works quite well. Youmight want to try that, but be careful not to get it in the switch. I would imagine it's fairly corrosive if not completely rinsed away.

I'm going up to the chrome shop this week to nag the guy to get my stuff done (you know the stuff that was supposed to take "3 Weeks - back in January) and I'll ask him if there is a product or process you can follow.

They also make the turn signal assembly in black, that's what I have.

You could also powder coat it if you completely disassemble it.

Thanks for the information Julie and Ross; whether I strip it or paint it, it has to be satin black or body color (Sheridan Blue).

That's true Ross, I forgot about the black ones. They are already powder coated and can be painted over if you use something "hot" like laquer.

Drill and tap

once I get the housing painted; I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket turn signal lever from 53-56, then I'll zip off, then drill and tap the pot metal holding the existing lever on. Should be strong enough?

Ehhh!

Pot metal is pretty tempermental. I'm picturing that you are trying to end up with the aftermarket switch mounted to the column with the stock turn signal lever on it, right?

The handle that comes on the switch is "V-ed" along it's length. I might be tempted to leave a half inch of it (cut nicely to look good) and run the stock rod in the remaining "V" with some epoxy or "gorilla glue" for extra directional strength.
