Yes, it's Remembrance Day in the UK too, that's why my avatar is a poppy. Tomorrow, 90 years ago on 11 November 1918 at 1100 the guns fell silent.
I always take time to think about my Grans favourite brother. He lied about his age at 16, was found out and sent home. Re-enlisted at 18 and lasted only 13 days at the front.
Here's an interesting piece from the BBC about the last men to die in 'The War To End All Wars'.
I respect anyone in the service or those who have served. I married an army brat and my Dad was a WW11 vet.....He by the way was one of the first americans to enter and liberate the german concentration camps. He passed 3 years ago at the age of 87.
My father was in the Battle of the Bulge. Was sleeping on his back in a foxhole with his arms grabbed around his chest trying to keep warm, and a piece of shrapnel went through his arm--doc said if he hadn't have had his arms crossed, it would have pierced his heart. He said he went over 5 days without sleep when he was there. I have a copy of a cassette tape from the 70's when he gave an interview to a junior-high kid who was doing a school project on interviewing local vets--quite interesting. He lives 900 miles away, but I always call him on Veteran's Day. Bless 'em all!
My dad was at the battle of the bulge also. He said it was the only time he saw his officiers take off their bars. The americans who were in this part of the war have not to this day been matched in the continuious fighting that occured . Same group that Audy Murphy was in. My Dad was in hitlers mountain hideout (already bombed to dirt) when the war ended. A big salute to your DAD.a true american hero .
In memory of my uncle Ken, corporal US Army, 2nd Infantry Div. who made the ultimate sacrifice on July 22, 1951, in Korea. He was returned to duty after being wounded on 3/51. The family often wonders if this may have contributed to his death.
