Do you think the US government is going to bail them out? Or should they just be left to the market?
I was listening to the news today and the point was made several times that if GM go bust the effect on the supply chain will put companies like Ford in big trouble.
GM has often been called a health care provider which happens to make cars because their overhead is so huge. The unions have squeezed their gonads to the point where folks with no skills and no education (ie, someone who never had the motivation and responsibility to better prepare themselves for life) make as much on an assembly line putting on door ***** as someone with a bachelors degree.
If a bailout happens the government ought to require them to overhaul their company, cutting costs and making the union take very steep concessions to get GM back on competive ground with the rest of the world. Basically, you can get paid what you're worth and keep your job. Won't happen though, because of who the unions contribute money to (I won't go into details and stray into politics, but I'm sure most folks know what I'm alluding to).

In 60/70's Britain that was the exact situation at Ford in Dagenham near London. All the worst stories about dead men on the payroll and beds on the night shift were actually happening there.
