I also have had this problem. What I have found is that must cig adapter plugs are cheaply made and do not have good spring tension to hold them in place in the outlet. Take a little emory cloth and rough up the inside surface of the outlet to give the connection a little more friction.
I have a 12v plug for my winter stobe beacon. It is in and out numerous times over the winter and never fails. It has a very rugged plug. I would blame your appliance plug before I would fault the power point. Pryout the ground staps so it fits snugly or change the plug on your cord.

Happens with all 4 power plugs I try to use in the PP. All 4 work fine in the cigarette lighter.
Spoke with the dealer where we bought the truck. He said that you need to replace the PP and to do that you must pull the radio to get to the PP. On the 04 SD there is a metal brace between the radio hole and the PP. Dealer said it that case its about $150.00 to replace the PP.

PP must have overheard my conversation with the service writer. That or the suggestion of using emery cloth on the PP contact points worked. Ran a small piece of emery cloth around the ground side then put a piece on a small wood dowel and worked on the positive pole and everything worked fine today. Have a tube of dielectric grease will rub a small bit on the shiny parts tomorrow.
I'm kinda dumb when it comes to automotive stuff and I'm not sure what you have all just said has explained the problem with my truck. I have a 99 F250 and I had a satellite radio plugged into the cigarette lighter. This had worked for several years until recently. The radio stopped working suddently. I pulled the radio plug out and noted my charger broke. The small metal tip on the end of the charger remained inside the cigarette lighter port. I tried to pull the metal tip out but while moving it the tip hit something on the side or near the end and it made a spark. (I'm no electrician). I ended up replacing the charger plug and putting it into the cigarette lighter but it doesn't work. I tried the charger in the power point and it worked without any problems. I checked the fuse in the cigargette lighter and found it was blown. I've replaced the fuse and again tried to put the charger in the lighter but it still won't work. Is it something where I need to replace the entire socket or does it sound like the wiring could be fried? I know I should be using the power point instead of the cigarette lighter but it would be nice to get it to work. I've tried other chargers in the cigarette lighter port and nothing works, not even the cigartte lighter itsself...any help would be appreciated.
Check it with a multi meter for both voltage and ground continuity. Do this by inserting the red probe in the center where your tip was stuck and the ground (black) probe against the body of the vehicle like a bolt under the dash. you should get 12v then swithch to continuity and place the red lead against the barrel of the lighter socket and black to ground (bolt) etc. the meter should show 0 resistance.
