My 2001 7.3L will not start. It cranks just fine, but while I am cranking it I hear a relay(I think it is a relay) clicking under the dash. Does anyone have any ideas of where to start looking for a problem?
We think it may have something to do with the security system, the truck had been stolen off a car lot before I got it, I had to put a new steering column in it and we never got the original key or key fob from the dealership. the other day I hit the lock button while I was in the truck then opened the door, so I don't know if it somehow activated the alarm or disabled the ignition or what. It may have nothing to do with it, but I can't figure out what the clicking is that is coming from under the dash.
your batteries are probly low that is the norm when you hear relays clicking
engine will crank but not start with low batteries have to have at least 10.5 volts while cranking to start
Battery Power is good, The truck is turning over fast and strong. I even hooked some jumper cables to my other F-250 just to make sure.
There is no smoke at all, and the tach is not moving.
I held my head under the dash while my brother cranked the truck and it sounds like the clicking is coming from somewhere under or behind the radio. It is steadily clicking the whole time the engine is cranking.
Jim maybe on to something, cause when my cps went out,I had shut it off, went into the store, and it would not start when I came back out.spun fast, but I didn't notice any clicking noise.

Your CPS failed.
You have a few options:
First, you can get it fixed for free by Ford under the CPS recall. The problem is the recall CPS can cause cylinder contribution faults, and some have reported loss of mileage, rougher idle, etc. Ford is currently "investigating" the new CPS's. You can tell which one is the recall CPS by the color, grey is the recall one, black is the original one.
The other option is to buy a black CPS (like the one you currently have), and install that in your truck. The black ones are getting harder to find. DP-Tuner carries them, but they are on backorder for another week: DP TUNER Or you can try your local IH dealer to see if they happen to have one in stock.
If you are in a bind, pick up a grey one for now, and then hunt down a black one. The general consensus here is not many really like the grey CPS.
Here another item to check.. (( copied this from a older thread)
The fuel bowl heater you've read about is on the same circuit as the IDM in the fuse panel, so when the heater shorts, the fuse blows and the truck won't start. To get around that, unplug the heater, then replace the fuse. The way to tell if you have a heater problem is there will be no wait to start light on the dash.
The parts store down the road had a gray cps in stock, so I am going to put that in tomorrow morning and see if that solves the problem.
That might be your problem. A lot of the guys in here say to stay away from the CPSs you can pick up at parts stores. I dont know if this is why or if you have something else going on. If it was a chain parts store see if you can take it back and get another, then go to Ford, DP Tuner, or International and get you a black CPS.

Agree 100%. The chain store ones' fro some reason are hit and miss, most of the time......MISS.
