Pre-purchase help: 64 F-100
Hi Folks,
Well, as the former owner of a '64 F-100 stepside, I've been smitten by the bug again.
Someone down a street I regularly drive on has a '64 fleetside F-100 up for sale...it originally had a six in it, as the emblem on the hood is the bolt through the cog (and not the V-8).
I'm kind of a purist, so I will probably set about fixing a few things once I have it:
The F-100 tags on the side of the hood are missing. How easy are these to get ahold of? How about stock hubcaps?
Also, assuming it still has the six under the hood, what should I expect to find? Is the 223 the only factory six option for the '64 F-100 (two wheel drive)? I recall that in the old one, the carburetor float (which was made out of foam) sank, and I had to spend months finding a replacement. I finally found a company that made a replacement float from brass, but you had to buy those in a two-pack. Anyone know what company that is/was?
I vaguely remember the front kingpins going bad as a problem on these trucks. The only way I know of to discover that problem is to drive over a bump or two at speed and let it rattle the front end...
Weren't there rubber or clay shock mounts for the cab (between the cab and the frame) that could go bad, too? How can I tell if those are any good?
Finally, any common areas on the fleetside bed that I should check for corrosion (considering that I only know the stepside bed)?
Thanks!

The 64 had three engine options, 223 six, 262 six (rare), and 292 V8.
My 64 F100 W the 292 has the gear type hood ornament. The engine and ornament are factory. So I assume they were sold that way.
Side emblems are available. Some companies to check out are.......Denis carpenter, Concours parts, LMC, and NPD. I ordered all of theses catalogs over the internet.
Floats for the holly bbl are still available through my local parts store as are rebuild kits and metering parts. You may need to shop around at diffrent parts stores to find them. The small older parts stores usualy have the old catalogs sitting around, and are more likely to "dig" for parts.
Cab mounts, floor boards, A-pillar bottoms, and varios other patch panels are available at carolina classics. Cab mounts on mine are bad, that is a common problom. You may need to weld new ones in. They still make the rubber donuts for mounting them.
Kingpins do go bad, they make .010 oversize kingpins. You need to have them reamed oversize and then install the new ones. or you can fab a set up.
My 64 is un restored and my styleside (chevys are fleetside) has rust only on the overbreak under the body.
Good luck I hope you enjoy your truck if you decide to buy it.

Hi Folks, Well, as the former owner of a '64 F-100 Flareside, I've been smitten by the bug again.
Someone down a street I regularly drive on has a '64 Styleside F-100 up for sale.
It originally had a six in it, as the emblem on the hood is the bolt through the cog as it should be. (and not the V-8) V8 = 1965/66 only.

Only 1965/66's with 352's use a different front hood emblem: C5TZ16607A = V8.
All 1961/64 6 or V8 / 1965/66 I-6's use the Gear & Lightning Bolt: C1TZ16607B
Both these emblems have been reproduced.
The cab insulators are different upper and lower, but are the same 1964/72.
Kits are available from repro parts sellers.
The stainless steel hubcaps that Custom Cabs used were just reproduced by Dennis Carpenter.
The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code. 1961/64: There were two I-6's available, one V8.
B = 262 1V I-6 / C = 292 2V / J = 223 1V I-6.
I've seen some of the hood side emblems NOS at swap meets, dunno if they are reproduced or not.
New carb floats are prolly available from obsolete parts suppliers.
btw: Styleside = Ford / Fleetside = Chevrolet / Flareside = Ford / Stepside = Chevrolet.
Look on this page among the FTE sponsors for links for the following:
MAR-K / AUTO KRAFTERS / MAC'S ANTIQUE AUTO PARTS / NATIONAL PARTS DEPOT / BLUE OVAL TRUCK PARTS
Their catalogs are available online, can be downloaded.
Not an FTE sponsor, but Dennis Carpenter (denniscarpenter.com) obtained all the original tooling from FoMoCo, offers the highest quality reproduction parts.
Carpenter not only sells his repro parts to enthusiasts, but to all the other repro parts sellers as well.
A lot of repro stuff sold today is cheaper than Carpenter's, but is made in China crap. You get what you pay for!

Depends on the price, the rust, and what you want to with it. This site will give any info you need about that truck, where to get parts, and how to fix it - don't worry about that. The big question is, is it worth salvaging. The engine can be fixed or replaced, there are now alot of repop parts and panels out there. If you weld, there are a lot of patch panels now available too.
