Need front retarded u-joint
I am in need of that retarded cap with the spring that goes between the double u-joint.
Anyone know where I can get a rebuild kit or even a good used shaft?
Thanks
Rick

One of the rear U joints let go on the front drive shaft.
It is called a "double cardon" joint and, depending on the style, has a press fitted ball, or a needle bearing style ball on the end of the drive shaft which fits into a cup on the flange yoke that attaches to the transfer case output shaft.
I took it to a driveshaft repair shop, told them it came out of a '99 f350, they nearly called me a liar and said it was a GM style double cardon joint which has the permenantly attached ball on the end of the driveshaft. This ball fits into a tapered well in the flanged yoke with some "wedges" to take up the slack. Apparently you can't buy it anywhere.
Ford listed the part for over $1000.00!!!!!! They checked the price in three different places to see if the decimal point had been shifted by mistake. No such luck.
A new (oem) drive shaft was less than $600.00, still disappointing as all I needed was a part that should cost $82.00.
Further investigation has revealed that FORD built my front driveshaft with a "Saginaw" style double Cardon joint and that the flange yoke for this is no longer available. It is easy to identify because the fixed ball remains on the end of the driveshaft and there are no needle bearings.
Most FORD driveshafts use a spicer style double cardon joint which does use a set of needle bearings and a shaft like stub which fits into them.
Frustrated, I left the whole driveshaft at the driveline shop here in Halifax where the ospicious Saginaw style end will be cut off and discarded (sigh of relief) and a conventional Spicer style end (the one it shoulf have had all along) will be welded on in its place.
So much for a simple part replacement!
Has anyone managed to find this elusive replacement Saginaw style flange yoke?
Will I have to go through this all over again when the rear shaft fails?
