I,m new here I recently bought a E-150 it has a 4.9 it seemed like the choke was stuck when I bought it drove it home it looks like it has 110,000 miles don.t look like much maintenance has ever been done so far I did a fairly thorough tuneup dist cap rotor button plug wires plugs found the egr valve not working replaced that the exhaust pipe was leaking at the manifold replaced that new ends for the battery cables the air pump is not workingi,ll be fixing that soon the valve cover gasket and side cover will soon be changed it still sounds like a small exhaust leak?? I checked the air tube ?? seems good no rot what are the 3 solenoids on the valve cover one is EGR?? my timing is controlled by EEC?? I was going to change the fuel filter install new vacuum lines maybe rebuild carb the truck came with a code reader how does that hook up the haynes manual I bought don,t seem like much is chiltons better oh yea my tag on the drivers door is marked 10/84 thats a 85 right?? any help is really appreciated

The three solinoids are part of the feedback carb, which is controlled in part by the EEC. These work ok if all the vacuum lines and electrical hookups are good, but are trouble prone and hard to sort out if they go bad.
Mine runs ok, so I've never fooled with the carb.
My TFI ignition died once, so beware those are trouble. Just google search 'ford tfi' or search here for that one. If your truck runs, you don't have a problem yet and you can worry about that later.
As for the tune up and making sure tha vacuum lines are all good, that's a good place to start.

they must have gone bad at some time the two that go to the air pump/ thermactor are not hooked up the feedback solenoid was unhooked as well. I need to change the valve cover gasket you would not believe the smoke from oil on the exhaust

yea I,m kina finding that out I got the EGR valve hooked back up to vacuum and the choke pull off hooked back she running a little better
"Are you going to leave it stock or modify it?"
short term prolly just get it running well enough to use it it will be a work truck not too far down the road prolly duraspark her and find a non feedback carb ya would,nt believe the reading I,ve done the last week or so alot of good info here thanks alot for the help pal aprophet aka david
oh yea not sure what to call it but the "flapper valve on the exhaust manifold maybe diverter valve it warms the bottom of the intake manifold is it common for them to leak? thanks again
The main exhaust leak is the manifold working loose. This takes the intake with it and if you don't stay on it, you'll lose 1, 2 or even 3 cylinders. The front is worse than the back. The lower fastners are a pita. I used a universal on a couple of extensions to get enough angle to tighten them. If you pull the smog pump off, you can get to it easier.
Watch for those plastic vacuum lines breaking when your reaching around behind the smog pump near the carb.
Have not heard a leak from the heat riser, but mine is low miles.

Good luck with it.
I noticed that you are from Calif. I have a 84 Bronco and am trying to get it legal for here. I have a 6,1bbl,4 speed manual. I have the TFI ingition system and need to know what EEC that goes with it. The tag under the hood says EEC IV with a feed back carb. I posted over at the Bronco section but as of yet no one can tell me for sure. The reason I ask is, there is a EEC III in it and it runs like crap if I hook everything up and the wireing looks like someone tied a lot of the wires to what was there with crimp connecters. Which makes me believe that someone got a EEC III and wiring harness from the wrecking yard and tried to make it work and didn't. What EEC do you have in your 85? Do you know what a 84 should have? Thanks. Al
Never paid any attn to that, will look and check the manual in AM.
Thanks That will help a lot. If your manual doesn't tell you, there should be a tag next to the vacum diagram under your hood that should tell you what EEC you have. I bet you have the IV. At least I hope you do. Al
