7.3 idi performance

Hi all, this is my first forum. I just got a 94 f350 with the 7.3 idi turbo (Love the truck!). I was reading about the exhaust down pipe, and changed that along with a 3" exhaust system. I was also reading about the fuel adjustment screw in the pump. I got a pyrometer and now want to adjust the screw. What temp should the gauge run at? How far do I need to turn the screw? Is there any performance upgrades that you can reccomend? Is it worth a cold air intake or just k&n filter? Any help would be great!

there are to ways to turn the pump up on those. the Hillbilly way or the correct way. search google. there is a good sight that explains both ways.

deano-was-his-name-o,

Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

With the thermocouple behind the turbo, keep the EGT under 900 degrees.

How much black smoke are you seeing now?

I have the same truck too, we must be COOL.
To be SUPER COOL you have to have a 5-spd.

Want to come over and put a down-pipe on for me?
I heard it's a beeoch!

Welcome to the site, actually all these guys are COOL even if they have girly automatics.

I recommend adjusting your wastegate until you're seeing about 10 psi when you wind it out...then turn your pump up two flats. You'll love it.

Oh yeah, good luck finding an intake of any sort. Any you will find online are for a Powerstroke and won't work. I built my own (pics are on my cardomain if you care to see)

Thank you guys for your help!!!!

Dave: I don't have any black smoke right now, even full throttle.

Dodge/Cummins: I own an exhaust shop so the down pipe was a snap. I did 2 1/2" because that's what the turbo is, then went 3" from there. I could see where a 3" down pipe on that truck would be fun.

Ghunt: How do I adjust the waste gate?

You need gauges before you adjust fuel or the wastegate.
Pyrometer before you adjust fuel, boost gauge before you adjust the waste gate.

Engine temps can melt pistons, the pyrometer will warn you if it is getting to hot.

With a base compression ratio of 21.5 to 1, to much boost will shorten your head gasket life considerably.

10 pounds of boost puts you a bit over 36 to 1 for a compression ratio and that is inside what I would recommend for a stock engine.

Are you running a muffler?

The 2.5" downpipe is going to hold in some extra heat and not let the turbo spool as well as it could.

ATS turbo's use the outlet flange on the left, Ford used the one on the right.

The ATS flange takes a 3" downpipe, lower EGT with faster and higher boost is possible.

The intake works good. Sounds cool too.

As for adjusting the wastegate...you have to remove it, clamp the rod and unthread the end, and then tap out the end of the rod (and run a die over the threads on the rod too).

Then you can put it back on and adjust.

That ATS flance looks like the way to go. I had the exhaust with no muffler, i wanted it a little more quiet so I put a magnaflow muffler on it.
