I think it is about a Chevy 1/2 ton ext. cab short box or something.
Are you worried about settin' something too heavy on it (hay bails, fat chicks, etc.)? I have nothing to back my guess of 1500lbs. Even at that, I think the tailgate itself will buckle or the cable/compression ends will give before the cable itself breaks.
My fat Azz black lab can sit on it with out breaking any thing. She does complain about how high the stock trucks are, and likes it better when you park in a ditch. I hope she s not reading this or Im gonna get bit when I get home
The tailgates made today will bend fairly easy. Unloading 55 gal drums of fuel will bend the tailgate. Even logs will bend them. My dad's tailgate is bending with just logs being thrown in and a few drums being unloaded. They just don't make them like they used to.

This is from the owner's manual of my '76:
CAUTION - The tailgate load should not exceed 500 pounds. When heavy cargo is to be loaded into your vehicle, it is recommended that you release the tailgate and load the items directly onto the pick-up box floor to avoid possible damage to the tailgate or tailgate support arms.
I'm pretty sure I have had more than 500 pounds on her though.
Well A Couple Skinny Girls Took To My Tailgate At A Mudfest And The Next Day I Couldnt Open It
I Think They Havin A Hard Time Climin Up And They Were Bouncin And Jumpin Around. I Couldnt Tell Them No But I Didnt Realize How Flimsy The Tailgates Are
I load my quad up onto my tailgate. With me on the quad it weighs about 600. Only time I ever had any problem with the tailgate was loading hay. Dropped a square bail from about 10 feet up directly on the tailgate (while it was down) and put a nice dent in it. Drilled a couple holes and pulled it out pretty decent tho.
