I have a cracked frame on my '72, just behind the steering box.
Unless I hear otherwise, here's what I plan on doing:
1) drill a 1/8" hole at each end of the crack
2) drind out a vee
3) MIG it (actually flux core wire feed)
4) cover it with a little diamond-shaped fish-plate to spread out the stress.
Here's a link with a few tips:

Here's one for oil platforms, but friction welding is beyond the scope of our projects:

No short answers, but another discussion:

1. the newer frames(not my 50 year old frame) use a harder steel and require a bead at least the same stregnth as the frame and a welder that will penetrate the thickness of the metal used
2. heating the parts will make a better weld
3. when adding structual peices the metal should be at least the same hardness as the frame
These are given for any welder for structual welding. They were mainly for me c-notching a frame. He said it should be safe if I don't haul anything, and then if I did it's up to how well I did the job as to how the frame holds up. Of course smaller jobs, like fixing a crack, do not require these.
I decided not to post pictures of my welding.
Although penetration looks pretty good, the beads are not too straight.
It's fixed and the truck handles much better.
