I have a searched a number of terms and differing combinations of terms.
I have not found it answered anywhere....but...here goes...as if the title did not give it away already.
I would love a 4th or even 5th gear in my F250, 2WD, 6.9 IDI....I have the stock C6. Well I think I do...I am sure it has not been replaced to this point.
In essence, I want to get the RPMs down when on the highway.
Thats a tough one, nearly all automatic overdrives have an weak spot-and it takes big $$ to keep them alive. I too have a C6, behind a 429-and would love overdrive, but the cost, vrs. the amount I drive it, I might as well accept what I have.
For me, I might be able to build up an AOD trans, with an adapter to fit, but to go through the trouble, and cook the custom trans would slay me. Vrs. using a good ol cheap C6-that will last for years.
Another option would be a newer 5 speed-standard, but the effort and cost is high again.
These days, it seems if you must have a diesel truck, and auto overdrive, your best off finding a newer truck, factory made with all the good stuff.
sad but true.
However the gear vendors unit is very strong, and would most likely out last the diesel even.
I suppose...you could put faster rear end gears in and use that low gear planetary for the C6 that tci makes. Still pretty expensive at over $700 just for the planetary...and you still only have 3 gears, but wider and less rpm in high.
I don't know if anybody makes a plate to put an AOD on an IDI or not (aren't they their own pattern?)...but if they do, definitely get a beefy one and put lower rear end gears to give that AOD as much advantage over the tires as you can stand!
Hah! Put a manual valve body in that C6 and find a two-speed rear end out of a truck! That would be freckin AWESOME!
Forget the AOD. The E4OD would be the one. Forget the truck two speed axle--waaayyy too big to fit under an F250 or even 350/450.
Gear Vendors is the best option. You'll save fuel with any OD, but you're not going to save money.
