Hiya.....I had to recently replace the float on my carb as a monkey had apparently mangled it. I did so, and the truck runs silent and like new....perfect! BUT......if I restart it right away it fires instantly without fuss. If I leave it a few minutes and try, I HAVE to put my foot all the way to the floor before it will catch. I am assuming the float needs to be set, but have no clue to what measurement. It is a 2 barrel, I assume a motocraft 2100?
I assume this is after the motor is warm? Typical "boil out" of fuel in these carbs. As the heat starts to build up, it purcolates the fuel and it then runs into the venturis and floods the engine. You could just move the float DOWN a touch and see if that helps. I have one of those "float level gages", but not handy at the moment. As long as the top of the float is about level when shut off, I'd say it's pretty close.
You shouldn't have to, but that was typical with mine til I ditched the Autolite and put a Holley 4bbl on it with a heat isolator plate under it. Still was tough sometimes, but was a bit better.
ahhh my truck starts up so easliy. 1 millisecond bump of the starter and she fires. i have a spacer inbetween my intake manifold and carb, and then another spacer inbetween the carb and air cleaner. and i live in florida. jowiler mentioned this idea to me awhile ago and i'm so glad i did it.
p.s. you may want to check your timing. sometimes if the truck is tough to start it needs to be backed off or retarded a bit.
