I would imagine the donut gasket(s) is/are shot but IMO the only way to reliably determine
that is to take it apart. Soak the nuts with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench for a day or two. If
you don't mind sacrificing your exhaust, it might be easier to cut the exhaust pipe
downstream a bit and remove the entire manifold + the remaininglittle piece from the engine
and work on it on a bench. You can later re-join the pipes, either via welding or get one of
those clamp-on union thingers for a couple bucks at the auto parts store.

what engine? r/l side? Whe its cold start it up and immediately (before the man gets hot) put your hand aroud the leak and try to determine exactly where its coming from. Plugging the tailpipe with a rag or having someone blip the throttle might help

Be prepared to take the whole manifold off if you twist the studs in two.

sorry just re-read... the left (drivers) side on my 86 f350 drw 2wd has a heat riser valve (hrv) between the exh man and the y-pipe. the top of the hrv is a gasaket (to ex man) below is a flange (no gaket, just metal to metal). if you have that setup You need to figure out exactly where the leak is & go from there

Sounds to me as a good reason to install headers. These days you can get a set for less then $150 and it's just as much work as fixing this leak.
