For the lack of a better term. I'm really not wanting to look at ball joints. Only because I don't have time to do them. From a very quick inspection - they look OK.
That said - the noise is consistant in sound and placement. It sounds like it's right under the driver seat. I know it's reverbing and more likely than not it's front suspension, but as I said - everything looks fine. I will probably crawl under it this weekend and have a look.
Anyone have simular situations and found something silly? I'm really hoping it's something easy as I'm absolutely covered up at the shop and don't have time to do a major repair.
Truck has 70k, 350, lwb, cc, lariat fx4 3.73. 6.0
What's the chances of it being the running boards? Someone make it sound simple so I'll take a closer look? lol.
Have you checked the radius arm bushings? Had to do them when I had my 94 Explorer and they produced a solid "clunk" whenever going over bumps in the road...
Take a look at your steering stabilizer, the u-bolts that go around the axle came loose on mine and it was making a clunk sound. Good luck finding the source of your clunk.
Mine has the same "clunk" noise you're talking about. I'm picking it up from the shop in the morning. Hopefully the issue was solved.
My swar bar end links were shot and they were replacing the one of the lower ball joints too. Would have done the work myself, but couldn't find the time. Good luck. I'll post the results tomorrow afternoon after I drive it around a bit.
I bought mine had a 4" lift put on it within the first 5000 miles an while working it surveying mine would give me a hard thump right under my feet as well, but heres what I found.
Thing is I never run it fast off road to many stumps, DEEP holes, fence post an lots of unexpected things that i find. So i tend to travel as easy as I can, an it still makes contact.
I've seen a few bad body mounts, but they make more of a creaking noise unless they're horrible. It's not your bump stops, is it? If it's not lifted, or only a little, your axle could be bottoming out.
Check your sway bar bushings as well as the end links. I get the clunking noise on bumps too and my end links are fine, but I can grab my sway bar and move it about 2mm back and forth inside the bushings.
I had the same problem. at 20000 miles I put Monroe Gas Magnum shocks on it as it was porpoising when towing my 5th wheel along I95. At 50000 it was rattling so bad when going over bumps I replaced the sway bar bushings and end links with Energy Suspension poly bushings but to no avail. Ball joints replaced too and no change. I finally got pissed off at the bone jarring ride from the Monroes and got a complete set of Bilsteins plus a new steering stabilizer and not only does it ride great now but no rattle/clunk! That's the last time I will ever use gas magnum shocks for the difference in price the Bilsteins are well worth it.
Many thanks for the responses. It's pretty loud and consistant if I'm traveling on uneven terrain.
IE: Getting to camp with the TT on the back and on a natural trail that gets big equipment traffic. I can hear it when both axles make contact. The front makes a little more noise than the rear, but it's still there.
It's an 05' if that helps. This truck has been solid for me so far and I'm probably going to find either a sway bar issue or possibly a shock. The truck tracks and rides fine on hard pan surfaces with no vibrations.
10 ply Terra's and they're brand new.
Much thanks for the responses and I'll post what I find this weekend. I'm getting the bikes ready for the following weekends ride. Got an axle to replace on one and snorkels to test on another.
