today i got a good whiff of burning oil at the stop light. i found out it was me when i fouund oil dripping from my tail pipe. so this is what i found on craigslist:
1996 Ford Powerstroke 7.3 short block, new Clevite rod bearings, main bearings, cam bearings, new Mahl pistons, Perfect Circle rings, piston oilers. It has been sleeved on all 8 and bored .030 over. Balanced rotating assembly. Reconditioned rods. Hot tanked with new freeze plugs.
I have over $1900 in this professional build, so my loss is your gain.
I got him down to $850 so im buying it. i want to stay around 400-450 hp. i am going to get my heads rebuilt, but what else? what would you do? can i reuse my cam and lifters? i have learned alot from FTE but i still have never been into a diesel. polenty of gassers tho.
thanks
andy
if your putting together a new engine I would get a new cam and lifters. To get to that HP you'll need Big Sticks, Big Oil and a good chip. I have talked to Dale @ Tymar about building up a Powerstroke and he really knows his stuff, I would give him a call and tell him where you want to be and can set you with the stuff needed to get there.
Your oil issue is probably your turbo not your motor. I would do a little investigating. The motor does sound like a good deal though. Even a low mileage used engine will run you more than that.
If you are planning on going through with the new motor I would put Head Studs in it as well. It will be real easy to do. I am with TJ on the turbo though. How long has the D66 been on there and how many miles on the current motor?
i noticed when i got the d66 after a few miles the shaft was wobbly. so i called beans and they said it was normal no matter how much i tried to explain it. its got about 3k miles on it. i have only towed once with it. egt's have been careful watched and i havnt been goofing around either. motor has 212k miles on it. i had an egt problem awhile back and i still never solved it so i barely drive it anymore. no exhaust leaks anywhere. trust me. i want the short block but like everyone else times are tuff. i got in a motorcycle wreck 2 weeks ago and busted my rist so im out of work until january. if its my turbo i might have to pass the engine rebuild up to save money. i havnt got all the medical bills yet so well see
Oil won't drip out of your tail pipe if you have an engine problem it will burn the oil. But oil will come out of the exhaust with a turbo issue. The shafts have some movement to them but regardless the oil seals should hold oil in. I would call Bean's back and talk to him about the oil from the exhaust. There have been a few D66's that don't live even when not abused.
i am waiting for a call back from bean. dosnt sound like a warranty issue but i have my fingers crossed. even then i cant take it off with only my left hand. maybe i can sucker a friend into it but i doubt it. ive had it apart 3 times now and its never been fun. might have to wait till this spring before i get to it. i am not sure if i want it back. i have 1200 into it so if its under warranty i might just have to bite the bullet and get the h2e kit. its going to take some saving tho. thanks
Where are you from? I've been eyeballing that short block on Craigslist for almost 2 months now. For some reason, it's still for sale. It's only about a 4 hour drive (one way) for me and it is a helluva deal...considering that there is a complete 7.3L out of an 01 or 02 for $4000 still for sale too (condition unknown).
im in coeur d'alene idaho right now. its in billings montana i think. guy said hed bring it to me on sunday. its a great deal but i cant believe im going to turn it down. i have a superduty PS i sold a friend that he trashed and gave back. its an $18k that i wouldnt pay 4k for today. unfortunately that im stuck with it now but i can drive it and im allready paying the insurance and truck payment on it so thats what im going to do. if coeur d'alene is closer to where ur at i could try and help you if you need it.
