Security

I'm moving to a bad neighberhood and want my truck as secure as I can get it. So here's the questions;

Has anyone out there had there truck broken on to?
If so how did they get in?
What can be done to make it more secure?
I haven't yet bought an alarm. I'm shopping any tips?

Install an alarm and lock the steering wheel. Don't make any of this obvious. Don't leave anything of value in view inside your truck. Even change. Don't dote and pamper your truck in front of anyone (I.E. wax, detail, etc.)

I live in a bad neighborhood too. My truck stays in the garage, so I don't have an alarm and therefor I couldn't let you know about how much the alarm would be. Let us know what you do though!

I had my new/used '96 F-250 broken into at my commuter rail parking lot a couple of days after I got it. Scumbags used a slide hammer/dent puller on BOTH door locks - made quite a mess of the doors. They got a Panasonic radio/CD player. I should have known better to leave it in there. No security/cameras at the suck-hole MBTA lots here in Moonbat-achusetts. God I hate this state!

So I'm thinking I should reinforce the locks and replace the side glass with a one piece window(no wing)made of Lexan so they can't break it. The truck has a canopy that even I have a hard time getting into so I'm not worried about the rear slider. Any thoughts

If you have to go through all that to move there, maybe you should rethink the move?

If not it would be easier to leave nothing in the truck of value, detachable face type stereo, if necessary even go as far as to remove the glove box light bulb and leave it empty and open. Nothing on the seat, dash or floor and then just leave the doors unlocked. Just add a key locking hood release handle so no one can open the hood, that would save you on bundle on glass claims/repairs.

I'm not going to "move out" of my truck every time I park it. I keep alot of stuff in my truck and it's going to stay that way. danr1 with your logic why bother having a truck it's just something to steal. I want to have nice things in a nice truck and if I want to leave my laptop on the seat the theif can just work at it till he wakes my a** up and I shoot him.

With Obama in the White House and a demacratic majority this country is heading into a depression and crime rates are going to go up everywhere! It's 1932 all ever again.

Well I was trying to be helpful, I can tell you one thing if you leave a laptop on the seat you might as well post a great big sign.

First idiot that sees it will tear through whatever is in the way to get at it, that was my point. You gotta take away any temptation, that is the reality we live in now days. locks will only keep honest people honest.

You could leave your laptop on the seat in plan sight with the door unlocked if I walked by and it would be perfectly safe. Unfortunately I'm not the kinda person you need to worry about.

one piece window can be broken.

if someone wants your truck or something in it they will get it.

alarm is your best bet.

but even that does not always work.

I was going to say the back slider, but you already covered that. A guy up the street had his truck broken into a few weeks ago. I live in "military housing" which is supposed to be a "closed" community. He actually did not lock his truck and they destroyed the dash as they ripped out the cheap CD player he had in there.

Anyways, maybe some dark tint would deter people from looking inside. That and maybe installing some bright lights or parking in your driveway with a security light on your house.

Remember, you could improve the overall security of where you park in addition to more security on your truck.

An alarm is on the way but it is only as useful as the people that can hear it. My goal here is to find the weaknesses so I can make the truck itself to hard to break into. I'm looking for stories on how others trucks have been broken into/stolen.

Keep in mind that if somebody wants what is sitting on your seat all they have to do is smash the window, grab it and go. You'll be lucky if you get out of bed before they are gone.

Alarms: I would recommend against "motion sensing" alarms because they are just annoying. I had one in my Nissan and it was so annoying I took it off. Accidentally bump into the car: alarm goes off.
The alarm that I have in my 94 has a remote and it goes off if the ignition is turned on without pressing the "unlock" button on the remote first. Those types of alarms seem to be the best idea to me. I think an alarm that sounds off if a door is opened without the "unlock" button on the keypad being pressed would be ideal. In South Africa you can get a flame thrower installed in your car as an alarm...

And locks truly do only keep honest people honest. A few years ago my house got broken into and all my guns got stolen out of my safe. They picked the lock on my front door (not that impressive,) but also picked my gun safe. I don't think that you should give up on security though as some suggest, that just gives into criminals way of life.

And remember, before you start popping of 30-06's at somebody jacking your stereo, as tempting as it is, if its not worth dying for, its not worth killing for.

That is exactly my point I want to make the truck to hard to "smash and grab" by reinforcing the windows, locks, and any other week points.

As to use of force, Washington State is pretty good. We have both "right to carry" I have a carry permit. And what is called "stand your ground" there is no legal responsability to avoid the threat. If I am walking to my truck as someone is breaking in, I say hey and "feel" threatend I can use deadly force. On top of that use of force is legal to stop any felony whether it's against you or not. That said it's not about the legal finality it's about the hassle of it all. No matter what I would end up in court with at least a wrongfull death suit from the family.

Where I used to live in CA, you had to "try to escape" before you could shoot somebody. Even if they were breaking into your house, you have to like crawl out the window or something. Ridiculous if you ask me.
