Socket size for pinion nut??

I have the D-80 on my dually and need to know what size socket to use to get the seal out. I hate it when my rear leaks, but I guess it could be worst if my front was leaking.

From what I understand it is I only have to change the seal?

IIRC it is a 1 7/8" 6 point. The outside wall may have to be ground down to fit inside though.

Your welcome Rick. It is a good sized one. Do you need the torque specs? I can try and look them up for you.

That would be great Jim. I was told to crank down on it pretty hard to make sure things line up right.

When we talked about this a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't sure. I hadn't removed one on a Dana 80. The last ones, I tackled, were the Sterling 10.25 & 10.5 differentials. Jim is definitely right on the size. Snap 0n even sells a special socket for them: http://image.snapon.com/international/pdf/M3586.pdf
You'll need a 'big tool' to get the job done.

Thanks Jim and Roland. That is a big tool, I know my tool is not that big. . Guess I will ask some of the farmers around here to see if they have that size socket I can use. Bet that socket cost major bucks. I know anything with the word SPECIAL with it will cost.

Wow, Jim, 470 ft-lb. Looks like I will have to get my fat neighbor to come and sit on the cheater pipe to get that much on the nut. Maybe I should have said BIG PERSON.

I did a little more research on it last night. Some guys buy a crartsman socket and turn the edge down in a lathe.

Darn Jim. I have a grinder, no lathe. Seems like ford would had made it where a regular socket would fit.

A manufacturer make it easy?? I guess you'll have to do some precision grinding!

I'd recommend borrowing a torque wrench to properly torque down the pinion nut vs. just using a cheater pipe or a big impact.

I agree with this. I have customers that own large equip. companys. So I hope I can find something big enough. I try to torque what I can.
