1996 460CU, E040D Tranny. Speedo was working fine. Pulled in to get gas. Pulled out, speedo bounced a few times and quit all together. Of course this made the tranny go haywire. Any idea where to start?
There is a speed sensor connected to the top of your rear differential. It is held in place by one bolt.
Check the connection at the sensor or replace the sensor if necessary. The only potential problem with this repair happens if you snap the bolt that holds the sensor in place. Penetrating fluid prevents this problem.
I had this happen on my 96 F150 5.0 E4od and it ended up being the sensor in the actual speedometer itself. I changed the sensor on the rear and it didn't help at all. Then I changed the speedometer in the cluster and I haven't had a problem since 15,000miles later.
