Got a good one. Speedo cable
You know how it's supposed to have two ends with female threads that screws on to the speedo guage and transmission? It has the speedo end, but the transmission end is just a cable housing. Where it goes in, there's an end that looks like it threaded in to a place on the tranny, but twisting it, pulling it, and whatever, allows it to spin freely and not come off. Is it possible it's completely stripped?
I'm going to pull the tranny eventually, but I'm curious if anyone has had this problem? So far, I can't order a speedo cable that will work.
The tranny end on the old Fords is not a screw on. There should be a retainer clip held in place with a single bolt. You may have to scrape off the grease to see what I'm talking about. Remove the bolt, and the retainer. Pull the cable out. The end of the cable has a cylindrical fitting with an O-ring around it. Inside that fitting will be the speedo gear.
Holler if this does not match what you have and we'll guess again.

I took off the retainer clip and when I initially took the cable out, I actually twisted it out of the metal housing that went into the tranny. I have tried to pull out the rest of that metal housing, which I'm guessing will have the O-ring you mentioned. I wasn't able to pull it out, but I will try again, and if I have time, I'll take a picture of it and post it for everyone's perusal. Thanks for the info, though.
